A few weeks ago I asked y’all what blog posts were most influential to how you build for the web. I had a lot of fun building a little micro-site for these links and it’s now available:

https://esif.dev/

This site makes a great reading list (and has an RSS feed too) and uses @cloudcannon with @eleventy.

A full tutorial on how this site was made is available here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yXcxvBJuULU

Well—wait. Is it not well known that the end-game for Astro is almost certainly to sell the company?

They’ve taken $10M from investors—likely to result in the same funding problem that Gatsby had—except with (imo) an even larger risk as they don’t seem to have started monetization efforts.

react.js announces plan to support web components by 2063.

the popular javascript library has set an ambitious target to add support for the custom elements specification supported by every other javascript framework within the next 40 years…

Apropos of nothing—a company may hypothetically find themselves between a rock and a hard place when said company has little-to-no resources to invest in a framework but relies on revenue from enterprise customers depending on that framework.

In fact, this hypothetical company may even publicly overstate the resources they are investing in said framework to protect that revenue.

I’m glad this is not what is happening.

@reverentgeek hey David! I come with a Eleventy Possum commission request!

Here’s our last in the series: https://www.11ty.dev/blog/new-mascot-from-geri-coady/

The idea is to do one of these every year—I prefer each artist do it in their own style. The other times we paid $300 but I think it makes sense to bump it to $400 this time because everything is more expensive now 😅.

The only requirements are to include a red balloon, a possum, and a transparent background.

Is this something you’d like to do? Appreciate you!

Excuse me, this is incredible—an online meetup to collab on web sites: https://sundaysites.cafe/

And the guide book ain’t bad either:

1. Write HTML and CSS.
2. Don't use JavaScript. Figure out ways to achieve something similar with HTML.
3. Automate as little as possible. Keep it manual until it hurts.
4. Sign your site with a link to your user page.
5. Have fun!

Looks like the cat is out of the bag now, but still no official word from the company: https://twitter.com/FredKSchott/status/1693007599803752638

The top contributor to Gatsby: https://twitter.com/lekoarts_de/status/1685942410776342528

Saw also a public Slack post from the founder saying Gatsby was in “maintenance mode.”

it will never cease to boggle my mind that when I look back on my life, of all the unexpected and surprising events to happen that I am forced to cope with and rationalize alongside my own personal life experience—y‘all—just take a second to think that some of the coolest people I know are named todd

like, what

and that’s maybe the uncomfortable crux of the thing—Netlify doesn’t seem particularly interested in investing or shepherding a community around Jamstack moving forward (whether it agrees that the term is toast or not) evidenced by shuttering the Jamstack Discord, the retirement of Jamstack Conf, the likely closure of the Jamstack Community Survey (given @seldo’s departure).

For me the logical next step here would be for new leadership to step in to clarify and shepherd Jamstack moving forward.

Whew, I have *thoughts* on this article from @ricmac: https://thenewstack.io/is-jamstack-toast-some-developers-say-yes-netlify-says-no/

Jamstack as a meaningful term lost a lot of power because it was diluted to include practices that went against the original definition.

If we want Jamstack to continue to be relevant and useful—we (as a larger community *independent* of Netlify) need to clarify the definition to have a meaningful and consistent technical foundation.

I have a personal security rule that I don’t give out personal information on incoming phone calls, which complicates all kinds of transactions with antiquated systems.

When standard industry practices throw off fraud red flags, it becomes obvious why folks get defrauded!

If I understand correctly, a “true threat” changed from how a reasonable person would interpret violent speech and raised the bar that the speaker must have a conscious disregard for how violent speech would be interpreted.

It seems unlikely that this change will help victims of harassment—but it almost certainly creates more protection for harassers.

You can tell a whole lot about a company by the buttons they show on their cookie banner:

🚩 Allow All / Advanced Options
✅ Allow All / Only Necessary
✅👑🏆🥇 We don’t have a cookie banner because we don’t track you

can we talk about how twitter encouraged use of their own custom meta tags for social media previews and that now non-functional HTML is little more than trash on the disinformation highway, a walmart plastic bag clutching to a dying thirsty weed, rooted and desperate for hyper-monetization

There is an incredible danger with increasing seniority that you deal entirely in abstractions and don’t build things. Or worse—you think that building things is for juniors.

🚩 You build the platform but nothing on the platform.

🚩 You build the framework but nothing with the framework.

🚩 You devrel but it becomes 100% rel and 0% dev.

Don’t fall into this trap! Be your own customer—keep building 🏆
