can we talk about how twitter encouraged use of their own custom meta tags for social media previews and that now non-functional HTML is little more than trash on the disinformation highway, a walmart plastic bag clutching to a dying thirsty weed, rooted and desperate for hyper-monetization

the H in HTML stands for hyper-monetization
@zachleat I was wondering about meta tags the other day and the twitter ones specifically - what's the consensus on a "complete" solution for meta head tags? open graph plus standard ones and that's it?
@robb @zachleat I tend to reach for @matuzo's boilerplate for stuff like this
https://www.matuzo.at/blog/html-boilerplate/
Especially since it tries to fall onto standard meta as much as possible
@zachleat Homestar Runner would like a word
@psychictides is that word trogdor
@zachleat don’t other sites use those tags too?
@cferdinandi @zachleat
Nothing technically preventing them but there's also the Open Graph protocol (og) which was created at Facebook but is open and used a number of other platforms.Google Search also uses a format based on schema.org syntax.

@cwilcox808 @cferdinandi @zachleat Last time I checked (2021 maybe), Twitter istelf was falling back on Open Graph for most of their tags. Now, duno for stuff not in the scope of Open Graph.
@zachleat
It's okay, HTML stands for Hold The Metadata Loosely.@zachleat Yes. Utterly bizarre that we have HTML tags with the word "twitter" in them.
@zachleat Slack actually *encourages* the use of twitter named meta tags in order to add more metadata into unfurled links 😳
https://api.slack.com/reference/messaging/link-unfurling#classic_unfurl@DavidDarnes @zachleat I was just coming to say this: Slack uses them for bonus data
@zachleat I’m pretty sure that Information Superhighway Beautification was part of Biden’s infrastructure bill.
@zachleat twitter:card just joins meta name=description and the ten different apple-touch-icon-precomposed things and so on. Simlar to an .htaccess file showing redirects from your URL Schemes Of Times Past; the litany of hidden <head> metadata is like "we were here" messages scratched into the walls of Pompeii, or the stone recording that Bybon son of Phola could lift it over his head. Marginalia from monks complaining about the wine in mediaeval manuscripts. A sort of shared cultural history.
