@mxbck incredible!
@terribleplan @zachleat @mxbck does that mean you have thoughts on this? 😇
@zachleat sounds neat, but do you have a catchy sales pitch on why I should want one?
or are all my friends already there?
😆@matt all of your friends are just one URL away 😎
@zachleat I'm no longer a member of the library system that I used to check this out from. Good thing there's Amazon!
@zachleat @praxeology How many followers do I need in order to post links?
@shimmeringtrashpile @praxeology unlimited links in bio

@zachleat Don’t tell everyone, but I heard they don’t do anything to stop you making more than one.
@ollicle 640 web sites ought to be enough for anybody
@zachleat do you have an invite to actually write content on your own site that's what I really need
@Yoav I did try a workflow like this with @aerotwist for awhile
@zachleat @aerotwist and it worked!! https://aerotwist.com/blog/dear-zach/

@mehulkar waiting for that new TLD to drop 😎
@zachleat Zing! Yes, clever, funny, but… I put together my own website on my own domain. It’s a one pager with no interactive features, I happened to have hosting included with my pay-for email service (Fastmail), I’m a professional software engineer (though not web developer) and it took me over a week!
Until building a self-sovereign presence on the web is as easy as signing up for a proprietary service people will keep signing up for proprietary services. And that is entirely rational!
Kind of like saying that as long as cooking dinner is harder than ordering takeout, people will order takeout. Which...is true. But cooking is still awesome.
I feel like the real barrier is hosting. People just really don't want to whip out their credit cards and pay every moth, and GitHub etc are too complicated for people who are just getting started.
@smyth @zachleat I don’t think the analogy quite holds. It’s more like that if you just get yourself some tools you can service your own car instead of taking it to the mechanic. Except you can’t, because modern cars are incredibly sophisticated and need expensive tools that require years of training to use properly. It’s entirely rational for people to not bother.
I honestly think that cooking and making a website are more comperable in terms of time spent. The issue is that, when you go to learn to make a site, people try to teach you React or whatever. Then it's like building a car from scratch or whatever.
People find HTML to be pretty intuitive, and cpanel is not hard once people know to look for it. But the current ecosystem is either for normie service users or full blown devs. There used to be more space in between.
ummmmm...

@zachleat I'm confused. Invites? To what? I can make my own site with Notepad if I really want to.
@zachleat I'd love a tripod invite.
🚨 I'm opening to the public the beta testing of this new technology called RSS to stay up to date without being tracked 😱😎 👉🏻subscribe
