if you don’t control the domain name—you don’t control the content

@zachleat And no, unless you are using a domain outside ICANN’s root, you don’t entirely control the domain.
@josephholsten @zachleat soo… we’re back to .onion names?
@anders @josephholsten by tor’s hammer!
@zachleat is hosting your blog on GitHub Pages with a custom domain name is considered « control the content » ? Real question.
@nighcrawl for sure it is! You could move that content to any host, just as long as you own the domain name.
@zachleat you’re right, didn’t though things like that. I was thinking « What if GitHub shuts down? Where is my content?» But honestly, it couldn’t be that bad 🤞
@nighcrawl @zachleat If GitHub decided tomorrow to institute a policy you disagreed with, or to just kick your off entirely, could you move elsewhere and point your domain at that? Do you have a backup of the repo? Could you pick up and go to GitLab Pages and use their build pipeline instead?
BTW I only mean these as questions I would ask myself to answer that kind of question. Hopefully they're helpful questions, if not, feel free to ignore!
@zachleat not your database, not your data?
