Had a really lovely time at @smashingconf in Freiburg today! It was my great honor to be the mystery speaker as we trapped hundreds of people in a room to teach them about web components 😈😈😈
Thanks for having me!

what if the quiet train car, but for everywhere
today I used a className attribute in HTML just to feel alive
slowly but steadily—@eleventy is still growing!

This poll got a lot of responses (and helpful replies)!
I wasn’t all that interested in preferences 😅. I really wanted to learn about the folks that selected the first two options.
A few lessons:
1. Supporting both modes is an accessibility priority—some folks need light, some dark.
2. Which mode folks need can be dependent on their surroundings (not just time of day).
3. Untested poor color contrast is a big problem!
4. UI toggles are used by folks as a workaround for color contrast issues.
Some really great color contrast checking features in Polypane: test dark and light mode at the same time!

…oh my
when the web site says “it’s better on the app” I will now assume they mean Phone.app 🚩🚩🚩
regrettably forced to use Phone.app today
A very unscientific poll about light and dark modes on web sites:

A few weeks ago I asked y’all what blog posts were most influential to how you build for the web. I had a lot of fun building a little micro-site for these links and it’s now available:
This site makes a great reading list (and has an RSS feed too) and uses @cloudcannon with @eleventy.
A full tutorial on how this site was made is available here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yXcxvBJuULU
Sure—I’m a little biased but @cloudcannon is walking the walk here—very impressive, team! 🏆🏆🏆
Certainly not claiming that Eleventy’s problems or risks are better, just different.
We’ve taken $0 from investors, which is definitely easier for me to manage long-term (what I’m optimizing for).
Well—wait. Is it not well known that the end-game for Astro is almost certainly to sell the company?
They’ve taken $10M from investors—likely to result in the same funding problem that Gatsby had—except with (imo) an even larger risk as they don’t seem to have started monetization efforts.
Unfortunately more bad news for Netlify as Astro jumps spaceship to partner with Vercel: https://astro.build/blog/vercel-official-hosting-partner/
one thing I like to do after joining a new company—just a small gesture—is to buy the CEO a gift card after they make an unsolicited request to buy them one in a text from an unknown number

Apropos of nothing—a company may hypothetically find themselves between a rock and a hard place when said company has little-to-no resources to invest in a framework but relies on revenue from enterprise customers depending on that framework.
In fact, this hypothetical company may even publicly overstate the resources they are investing in said framework to protect that revenue.
I’m glad this is not what is happening.
I suppose it’s only fair to update this thread again with the official statement from Netlify: https://www.netlify.com/blog/gatsby-cloud-evolution/
Lots of contradictions between things said in that blog post and the sources linked above though 😬

@reverentgeek hey David! I come with a Eleventy Possum commission request!
Here’s our last in the series: https://www.11ty.dev/blog/new-mascot-from-geri-coady/
The idea is to do one of these every year—I prefer each artist do it in their own style. The other times we paid $300 but I think it makes sense to bump it to $400 this time because everything is more expensive now 😅.
The only requirements are to include a red balloon, a possum, and a transparent background.
Is this something you’d like to do? Appreciate you!

Excuse me, this is incredible—an online meetup to collab on web sites: https://sundaysites.cafe/
And the guide book ain’t bad either:
1. Write HTML and CSS.
2. Don't use JavaScript. Figure out ways to achieve something similar with HTML.
3. Automate as little as possible. Keep it manual until it hurts.
4. Sign your site with a link to your user page.
5. Have fun!

Perhaps controversially—I believe the same could very easily happen to any VC-funded framework.

I now have access to the @cloudcannon social accounts—brand accounts everywhere just felt a chill and they don’t know why (yet)
instead of best practices maybe the practices can be pretty good
Feels like there are a lot of things going unsaid in the Gatsby.js community right now 😬
now those letters spell NOJS on my bookshelf 😎

oh ho I stumbled across this little signage case study history from NEJS CONF https://www.tinkeringmonkey.com/portfolio/nebraska-javascript-conference/
thank you to everyone who sent me their worst todd 😅
really struggling to think of a todd that isn’t cool
it will never cease to boggle my mind that when I look back on my life, of all the unexpected and surprising events to happen that I am forced to cope with and rationalize alongside my own personal life experience—y‘all—just take a second to think that some of the coolest people I know are named todd

Personally, I nominate @remotesynth 😅
and that’s maybe the uncomfortable crux of the thing—Netlify doesn’t seem particularly interested in investing or shepherding a community around Jamstack moving forward (whether it agrees that the term is toast or not) evidenced by shuttering the Jamstack Discord, the retirement of Jamstack Conf, the likely closure of the Jamstack Community Survey (given @seldo’s departure).
For me the logical next step here would be for new leadership to step in to clarify and shepherd Jamstack moving forward.
Whew, I have *thoughts* on this article from @ricmac: https://thenewstack.io/is-jamstack-toast-some-developers-say-yes-netlify-says-no/
Jamstack as a meaningful term lost a lot of power because it was diluted to include practices that went against the original definition.
If we want Jamstack to continue to be relevant and useful—we (as a larger community *independent* of Netlify) need to clarify the definition to have a meaningful and consistent technical foundation.
Making a little mini-site for these and to be honest it needs far more underrepresented folks—help!
If you were to pick one web development blog post that played a huge part in changing or influencing how you build on the web—which blog post would it be?
I have a personal security rule that I don’t give out personal information on incoming phone calls, which complicates all kinds of transactions with antiquated systems.
When standard industry practices throw off fraud red flags, it becomes obvious why folks get defrauded!

we’ve done it, y’all—we made it to 50.

If I understand correctly, a “true threat” changed from how a reasonable person would interpret violent speech and raised the bar that the speaker must have a conscious disregard for how violent speech would be interpreted.
It seems unlikely that this change will help victims of harassment—but it almost certainly creates more protection for harassers.
Reading through this summary and wincing, specifically at the ACLU attorney classifying the stalker’s targeted death threats as “inadvertently threatening speech.”

“CommonJS is hurting JavaScript.” It’s “not browser native. You need bundlers and transpilers to make all of this code work client-side.”
Seems reasonable! Can we talk about JSX next?

@seancdavis welcome to Netlify!
this toot has incredible but accidental “hair club for men” marketing energy
There is an incredible danger with increasing seniority that you deal entirely in abstractions and don’t build things. Or worse—you think that building things is for juniors.
🚩 You build the platform but nothing on the platform.
🚩 You build the framework but nothing with the framework.
🚩 You devrel but it becomes 100% rel and 0% dev.
Don’t fall into this trap! Be your own customer—keep building 🏆
