Working towards a stable 2.0!
“it’s not a showstopper for me but have you considered rewriting this entire repo in typescript?”
https://webcomponents.today/ from @kulykov looks to be a great library of resources for Web Components!
(needs a link to WebC too, maybe 👀😅)

@stavvers has boosted some incredibly hilarious gems into my timeline recently—follow them!

Reading @nolan’s excellent “Shadow DOM and accessibility: the trouble with ARIA”: https://nolanlawson.com/2022/11/28/shadow-dom-and-accessibility-the-trouble-with-aria/
If you’re concerned about the drawbacks of Shadow DOM—I really encourage you to try WebC!
Compile your Shadow DOM to Light DOM to workaround these issues. With a special shout out to the `uid` property for accessibility attribute mapping too (deep link here): https://youtu.be/p0wDUK0Z5Nw?t=455
weekly review ★☆☆☆☆ would not do business with this week again
yes I am subtooting my week, this is my personal growth journey
counterpoint:
if you can’t handle me offline, then you don’t deserve me extremely online
I just got a shady email asking for a paid link from my personal site to nextjs.org and I… what?
should web sites work offline or should we log off when they’re down
I’m asking the big questions here
this is a very classy and sophisticated toot for educated people
hoisting variables by my own petard
as I’ve always said, make sure to not
Maybe the biggest #Eleventy build I’ve seen in the wild: 152,486 pages!! 🏆

(good afternoon from my drafts)
a web site that throttles the developer’s browser to the slowest visitor’s page view
a web site where you wait for 1 KB of JavaScript and then you can double it and give it to the next page view
if you post @twitter.com links in your toots I assume that you check linkedin on the weekend
Thanks for having me on Shop Talk Show @chriscoyier and @davatron5000!
We talked a bit about JavaScript Frameworks, WebC, Web Components, Mastodon/Twitter, and <is-land>!

New blog post:
Archive your Tweets with Tweetback
https://www.zachleat.com/web/tweetback/
Tweetback is built with @eleventy and I do think #Eleventy plays a special role here. Eleventy is a production ready, stable site generator that now has very concrete public proof of many projects with ~50,000 page builds (and even one in there with >118,000 pages—hi @nhoizey)
(this draft never dreamed it could be a real toot)
Web Components leverage the for-free features of the web platform to most efficiently enable high performance, minimal JavaScript use cases.
if you post @twitter.com links in your toots I assume that you contact ticketmaster customer service to see if you can pay an extra service fee
if you post @twitter.com user links in your toots I assume that you use the same password for everything
today is thanksgiving but tomorrow is git blamesgiving
one more toot in this thread and I am now the villain
1400 words on the historical context of the recipe but I just want the ingredient list and the assembly instructions
this blog post could have been a gist
one code snippet on the docs is worth at least one thousand words
`@tweetback/canonical` is working to take back canonical twitter URLs!

New blog post: https://www.zachleat.com/web/vote-with-your-tweet/
A short write-up on the motivation behind votewithyourtweet.com and my own personal future on the Twitter platform.
I’ve removed the twitter link from my personal site: https://www.zachleat.com
open source is amazing 🥹
Cheers to @slightlyoff as he, uh… debates the merits/drawbacks of the JavaScript industrial complex tonight 😅
I wonder if the median Lighthouse scores of web sites built with Next.js will come up! 👀
Not sure what my plans are for the data long-term—but I like this step for now (given that I am already hosting a backup).
I followed @gossithedog’s advice and made my account private on Twitter and linked to my Twitter Archive in my bio.
The web’s best quality is that it reroutes around damage and right now: Twitter is damage.
It’s been three years in the making, but after some gentle prompting and prodding from a few friends (thank you @nhoizey!)—it has finally happened.
We’ve finally open sourced the #Eleventy Twitter Archive project named `tweetback`:
You may have seen this in action on my site https://zachleat.com/twitter/ or the newly shipped Eleventy Archive https://twitter.11ty.dev
You can find the source code for the project here:
https://github.com/tweetback/tweetback
Try it out!
You can see this in action on the Eleventy Twitter Archive, where any links to https://twitter.com/zachleat/ now link to https://zachleat.com/twitter/ instead.
We’re taking canonical Twitter URLs back, one archive at a time:
Sunday afternoon stats:
🤯 162 tweets
📈 6483 page views
📦 18MB hosting bandwidth (this makes me laugh 😆)
Some early Sunday https://votewithyourtweet.com stats after the late night Saturday launch:
🤯 96 pledges!
📈 4,141 page views
🤓 11MB hosting bandwidth used
did I make this months ago waiting for this moment? yes
are things a little different now? yes
do I still think we should use our voice to speak up? yes
Dust off those Twitter credentials, y’all—I launched a new project:
continually disappointed but never surprised by musk tonight as he reinstates trump to twitter

We are in the midst of another Google Reader-level community disruption.
It’s a good time to reset, take stock, clean house, and own your content!
If you don’t yet have your own web site—it’s a good time to start!
1. The most crucial piece is ownership of the domain name.
2. Then add content (it can just be plain HTML!)
3. Iterate on it! Make it better, but more importantly—make it yours.
On the #Eleventy Leaderboards, we added a new Page Weight column and it uses floppy disks (1.44 MB) as the visual.

I am tempted to use baseline Next.js bundle size instead—is this too mean or no 😅
super controversial opinion: testing is good
if I were interviewing (I’m not), I might be tempted to casually ask about elon musk and use the reply as a litmus test to glean some insight into how much toxicity a company tolerates behind closed doors
just an idea
New blog post:
Use defer-hydration in your Web Components for… well, deferred hydration.

Yay! My WebJoy episode is up!
“We discuss the power of having your own website versus just relying on social media and algorithms, as well as the best way to get started building a website if you're new to it.”
We recorded this earlier in the year—I’m curious how much of it sounds like it was recorded post-Twitter meltdown 👀

I hereby decree that twitter shall now be known as mastodon’t
I gotta say, attending my first conference IRL in over two years has me struggling a bit—feels like I went from 0–100 and my head is still spinning over-analyzing everything 😭
And the hard part is that everyone was so nice! It just feels like social whiplash 😅
Did I listen to a kids’ podcast on the history of toilets this morning? Yes I did 😅
Me, trying to sell a toilet that unnecessarily requires electricity to flush:
“Look, no one *disables* their electricity any more…”
Adding Declarative Shadow DOM support to <is-land> thanks to a collab with @techytacos!

Gotta say, I don’t miss t.co
I did it
@eleventy is on Mastodon :11ty: 🏆
Thinking today about how Twitter changed online discourse via pavlovian means and how it elevated so many folks that seem to do little else but thrive in controversy.
I’m curious how much it changed how I interact with folks. I definitely feel more unfazed by external (outside my community) criticism than I used to be—for better or for worse.
Regardless, happy to have a new home with new and old friends to hit the reset button on the entire thing. Appreciate y’all ❤️
The Ghostery browser extension includes a Never Consent feature to automatically click no on cookie popups (so you never see them)
Awesome, it looks like https://brid.gy is already piping boosts and favorites to my #webmentions setup and it was so easy to add!
You can see it in action here: https://www.zachleat.com/web/jamstackconf-oss-panel/#webmentions
The video is up for the panel I was on at #JamstackConf earlier this week:
Open source software is out to end the framework wars
https://www.zachleat.com/web/jamstackconf-oss-panel/
Alongside Ryan Carniato (SolidJS), Fred K. Schott (Astro), Jessica Janiuk (Angular), Alexandre Chopin (Nuxt), and moderated by Sara Vieira (Axo).
The answer is thankfully yes! (Appreciate y’all—it was something I was curious about with solo-instances)
https://fediverse.zachleat.com/web/@brettmn@dreamin.online/109320115800913235
Here’s a mastodon question for folks that follow me: do you see my boosts or are those just local to my personal instance?
I don’t think I ever did an #introduction!
Hello y’all—I am Zach!
I’m a web developer. I work on the Eleventy site generator https://www.11ty.dev (full-time open source sponsored by Netlify 🙌🏻).
I used to write a ton of blog posts about web fonts and I’m get super excited about personal web sites!
My home online is https://www.zachleat.com
One post-#JamstackConf thought I wish I had communicated better on the frameworks panel:
The web will be better served by a broader plurality of successful frameworks: Lit, Qwik, Solid, Astro, Svelte, Marko, Eleventy, and the one y’all are dreaming up now!
The post-React world is here, it just needs your help to be evenly distributed 🏆
let the record show that I told @TrostCodes tonight that eleventy was three npm packages in a trench coat
What an energizing two days at #JamstackConf! So many awesome conversations and excitement—feeling incredibly grateful. It’s a great time to be a web developer ❤️
At #JamstackConf, Laurie Voss reports that the Jamstack Community Survey data reveals:
Web Components have arrived 🏆

elon if you want to learn about mastodon hit me up—I’m outside

drunk with mastodon admin power
oh my god I can add my own custom emoji to my mastodon instance
in unrelated news I have now verified my account :bluecheck:
At #JamstackConf today and tomorrow (Nov 7–8)!
Find me to get an #Eleventy sticker!
I am officially on the notoriously reliable BART 🚃
on-time airport anxiety on high alert when daylight saving time changes 😅
#jamstackconf here I come ✈️
I’m curious if this is a notification to folks to opt-in to a refollow? Did anyone receive something in Mastodon about this new account?
Well, the export was “successful” from @zachleat@mastodon.social
Only time will tell if the follower import works or not! 😅
I’m still working on self hosting my Mastodon and haven’t exported everything over here yet—but this is my long term home!
Gonna export from https://mastodon.social/@zachleat once my aliases are all set up properly!
The fediverse!
