I gotta say, attending my first conference IRL in over two years has me struggling a bit—feels like I went from 0–100 and my head is still spinning over-analyzing everything 😭
And the hard part is that everyone was so nice! It just feels like social whiplash 😅

@zachleat Your brain adjusted to the "new normal", perfectly natural to feel overwhelmed / weird.
@cthos yeah! Trying to not be too hard on myself 🥹
@zachleat It must be a shock for many to suddenly have so many people who care about similar things, in the same physical location. That's something not that common even before a few years ago. Community events are great overall for many reasons.
@autiomaa yeah! My favorite thing, I feel like I can be my authentic self in those settings
@zachleat I still feel this way when I go into my workplace's office. Everyone is very nice, but I am a hermit, and only used to interacting with husband and a 2-year-old. 😬
@zachleat feeling sympathetic to this, about to fly to our main office and meet lots of colleagues for the first time 😵
@DavidDarnes you’re amazing and they’re amazing 🏆
@zachleat met colleagues in person for the first time ever after having worked with them for 5 years. It was jarring and sort of surreal. I also scrutinized myself in terms of social behaviors. Whole thing felt weird
@gonzofish whew! 5 years exclusive virtual had to be some kind of record
@zachleat that was maybe a little misleading. The specific group of people I hadn’t ever met. But I’d met others in person (but only once!). Sort of a result of Covid
@gonzofish yeah, no worries! Still incredible!
@zachleat Did the same a month ago, very same reaction. Even before the conf I had trouble sleeping.
I’m normally very extroverted and love confs, 2 years of working from home really did their job. 😁
@apkoponen the muscle will strengthen back to normal in due time! 🙌🏻
@zachleat I felt that at all 3 IRL conferences I went to this year, if that makes you feel any better
@cjtype it does yes! 🙌🏻
