We are in the midst of another Google Reader-level community disruption.
It’s a good time to reset, take stock, clean house, and own your content!
If you don’t yet have your own web site—it’s a good time to start!
1. The most crucial piece is ownership of the domain name.
2. Then add content (it can just be plain HTML!)
3. Iterate on it! Make it better, but more importantly—make it yours.

@zachleat thanks for the heads-up on the io domain. As a startup co-founder with a primarily io domain, this is really useful to know and a serious topic for discussion.
@jamiedixon yeah, I’m glad to have migrated a few years back!

@zachleat I’m still unreasonably proud of getting samhenri.gold. hands down my proudest achievement
@samhenrigold it is an accomplishment! Well done!
@zachleat am i dreaming or did you make a twitter archive to eleventy thing recently?
@jed I have made this!
https://www.zachleat.com/twitter/
Deep link to instructions for a bare bones version of it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X3SrZuH00GQ&t=1092s
And a blog post 😅 https://www.zachleat.com/web/own-my-tweets/
I also pledged to open source it with the help of @nhoizey (and co) to https://github.com/tweetback (still pending, sorry Nicolas!)
@zachleat no problem!
@zachleat https://mystaticpage.com/ gives you a kickstart
@zachleat Great advice, but what's the Reader-level disruption on the horizon?
@vandys the twitter migration 👀
@zachleat oh #GoogleReader how I miss thee
@zachleat back in 2005 i couldn't understand why people were giving away so much valuable content to ad-run platforms. The key was the social interaction, I think, as well as the ease of it
I guess now is a good time to work on /look for good ActivityPub plugins to everything 🙂
@gvelez17 yesssssss
@zachleat As I've told people you can:
1) Get a domain name. Be sure to auto-renew.
2) Point it at existing social media to start.
3) Get a Linktree. Direct to that.
4) Then set up a blog or cheap web page.
5) Customize that.-
@saltajose I cannot resist plugging this lovely workflow from my employer 😅 https://app.netlify.com/drop

@catgirl makes me wonder if tabversus.space is available 😇
@zachleat old school surfing back on :) I remember those first connections I had with fellow web creators back in the day. We didn’t have Facebook but guestbooks. Still have friends from those days.
@Birgitta Awesome! Yeah, same! The web community is special
@zachleat wait is this web1 or is this web2.
@zachleat And a linktree is not enough! 100% agree that everyone should own a domain. 10$/year is within reach for the people who care about these things.
@zachleat and I should have added— accessibility makes your site better for everyone. Story of why I have short summaries on the top of my articles is here. Accessibility is essential for some, useful for all https://www.lflegal.com/2020/09/refresh-2020/#Summaries-at-the-top-of-every-article
@zachleat I love my domain name too — LFLegal because in 2008 a blind friend rejected my idea of LaineyFeingold dot com. No one would know how to spell my first or last name he wisely said, plus your email address won’t fit on your business card (remember those?) in one line of Braille. The url became my Twitter handle and now my Mastodon name. My brand. Motto? Accessibility matters and listen to disabled people! #a11y
@zachleat Having your own website is a good backup. A place you can call your own. I use mine to consolidate my presences elsewhere. If any of them go tits up, I can replace the feeds.
@zachleat there are ways to have ownership of your site without paying for a domain name - not everyone can afford one! Sites like Neocities.org offer free static hosting, and as long as you have the code stored somewhere, you can reupload it anywhere else.
@sophie yeah that’s a good call out (and with a plug to my employer too netlify.com 😅)
I do think it’s important to try to encourage folks to own their URLs though
@sophie @zachleat There are also free domain providers, such as https://freenom.com (if you're fine with domains like .tk or .ga)
@zachleat I love this approach! I can put whatever I want on my own server rarely worrying about what service I'll use!
I only worry about which service I'd use if I want non-trivial interactivity, otherwise nginx maybe with webforms who's submissions get forwarded to me for curation.

@zachleat Reader enabled a decentralized ecosystem and it's demise pushed us into more centralised publishing and identity (Twitter, FB, IG, etc). I feel like this is almost an opposite moment. It's showing many people who were resistant before why the convenience of centralization brings costs that may be too great.
@zachleat yes 👏🏻 yes 👏🏻 yes
So important but oof don't remind me of how much my recent domain renewals cost 🥲 I'd be completely fine if I just had https://ellyloel.com
But of course I had to go and buy:
🔗 https://elly.to for my own personal URL shortener and
🔗 https://elly.lol painfully close to my actual name but not quite close enough 🤏🏻@elly oh dang you got a whole spread of domains
