If you (like me) were attempting to npm publish via GitHub Actions using `npm@latest` (currently v11.12.0) and saw an error message involving `--prefer-online` and `--prefer-offline`, reverting to npm@11.11.1 fixes the issue.

I’m curious: is dealing with local dev server ports so cumbersome that you’d give write permission on /etc/hosts to an npm package?

Reading through a NYTimes article on the new 2026 USMNT World Cup kit designs. Noting that the design seems to give the men credit for the USWNT’s World Cup wins by placing 4 stars above the jersey crest, hmm…

If they have to share the stars, maybe they should allocate each team’s pay based on how many stars they’ve earned?

I have received A Lot Of Feedback (ALOF™) in the last week. The hardest and most insidious bits echo “Why does Open Source Thing need money?” which rhymes with “Why do you—a software developer working on Open Source Thing—need money?”
Trying not to read too much into it 😬
I’m really curious what’s above this store

Pretty good sticker haul from @webstandards State of the Browser last week! #SotB #SotB26

New on the Blog: Eleventy is now Build Awesome https://www.11ty.dev/blog/build-awesome/
Just a little update in video form too: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EWqP9fX9xn4
So much gratitude to @sia for all the hard work on the excellent https://11tymeetup.dev/
Whew. What a week. We have some hard but important news to share about the Kickstarter: https://blog.fontawesome.com/pausing-kickstarter/
We’ll be back soon!

My kryptonite is that I typically am not very online when I’m out at events in an attempt to be as present as possible — but I’ll go through all of the feedback now that I’m back home!
I have returned from @webstandards’ State of the Browser (#SotB #SotB26) feeling incredibly grateful to have been able to attend (and speak). An urgent and evergreen reminder that building a community around inclusion, diversity, and the safety to speak hard truths even when they aren’t popular is now more important than ever — good people of the web, unite!
Looking forward to seeing everyone at @webstandards #SotB today!

Spent the morning packing whistles into information kits with some great folks! ☀️🧊

Ended with a grand total of 373 (working 😅) whistles at the deadline for drop off today! I pivoted from small ones in bulk to my favorite big/super-loud ones.

A blog post means it’s real:
An official* logo for HTML (from @sstephenson)
The collection of whistles destined for anti ICE information kits grows further still

I think with this submission from @sstephenson we can consider this matter resolved https://indieweb.social/@sstephenson/116098273597530810
the corners are times angle brackets you nerd sniping weirdos

alright, I take everything back — default <h1> is what you get now

look, I’m not a designer but @digitalwire inspired something

I think HTML still needs a logo

I’ve tested about ~20 whistle variations. Optimizing for blowing efficiency, filament usage efficiency, and dB output volume, the single color print of this one is the best I’ve seen so far: https://makerworld.com/en/models/2365496-minnesota-state-flag-whistle (based on https://makerworld.com/en/models/1642251-flat-signal-whistles)
If I’m ignoring filament usage efficiency, this one is much bigger and unmatched: https://makerworld.com/en/models/548070-triple-tone-extreme-whistle
I have so many opinions about whistles, suddenly

it’s important to keep caring about how things work and how they’re built

“Dad, have you heard of the Expiration of Independence?”
“Hm… do you mean the Declaration of Independence?”
“Yeah, that one.”
I’ve been testing 3d-printed whistle variations; preparing a batch for drop-off to some local helpers for distribution.

Wouldn’t be surprised if we start seeing 3d-printed generic heads used as a privacy-focused workaround for identity or age verification done via intrusive smartphone or webcam face scan.

What’s a good name for the UX pattern where a search field in a header shows results inline, but the search itself does not occupy its own page or independent history entries?
Practically, it means you can’t go back to it. You can to navigate to ONE SEARCH RESULT and only one (at least let me open results in a new tab). All context about the search is lost when you select something.

Went over to a local ~60 person anti-ICE protest after work today. Blue protests in red states (esp. in small towns) are a special thing and real world community is worth a thousand echo-chambered social media posts.

it’s a good day to have a static site

RE: https://mastodon.design/@amxmln/115940713056928796
“I’m glad most of my projects don’t need any backend beyond static file hosting, as that significantly limits attack surface and maintenance pressure. I’m just a single person with a busy life, but as I’ve learned, running server-side software that is publicly accessible requires extremely timely updates” 🏆
Great takeaway: Having a web site shouldn’t require an ops team to monitor and update it — static is a lovely alternative to all of that complexity.
