   can we at least agree that naming it “the browser company” while building a new user interface on top of chromium is a little much

      I am just a boy standing in front of the internet, asking it to think about how “use-for-free” things are funded before you deeply integrate them into your daily workflow

      1. Tom Walker 1 hr later

         @zachleat luckily no one has integrated this into anything, deeply or otherwise

            @tomw are you saying folks don’t use Arc as their primary web browser? or was this sarcasm and I just missed it 😅

            1. Tom Walker 3 hr later

               @zachleat Unless there is some loop somewhere that I'm very out of, I've never heard of anyone using this web browser

               1. Zach Leatherman 4 hr later

                  @tomw ah, I can only say that my experience is different!

                  1. Sara Joy 5 hr later

                     @zachleat @tomw I've used it, but only on my work machine (which is a Mac) and only because it was a cute skin that differentiated it from all yhe other worky browser windows I have open.

                     I miss skinnable applications. Bring back Winamp!

                        @sarajw @tomw it really whips the llama.cpp’s ass

         @zachleat I thought about making a joke in response to this, but I'm just so tired.

         @zachleat they've got a monetization plan and it doesn't involve user data (wait, it's ads AND user data)

         @zachleat I fell for this one and I feel foolish.

         I’m considering giving Vivaldi a try before returning to Firefox. The UI change of pace was stimulating.

         1. Mia [data-css=poetic] 7 hr later

            @tylersticka @zachleat Yeah, Vivaldi looks real tempting right now.

            I'm curious why none of the alt browsers use gecko under the hood? But I imagine the answer is depressingly "websites are built for chrome" 😞

            1. Tyler Sticka 7 hr later

               @mia @zachleat Probably! 😬

               (Not the ones @cloudfour and @OddBird make, though! Hooray for user choice! 🙂)

               @mia @tylersticka @zachleat I did learn about Floorp recently https://floorp.app/en/

                  @chrisw_b @mia @zachleat Fun!

      @zachleat gonna start a company for a new OS — but it'll just run on linux — and it shall be called “The OS Company”. you in?

      1. Zach Leatherman 20 min later

         @jimniels *runs away screaming*

      2. Hasan Ali 8 hr later

         @jimniels @zachleat if you did, you could call the operating system “ZacOS”. Or from Zach’s perspective: “Gemini”

   3. vincent 20 min later

      @zachleat the NERVE.

   4. Eric Portis 22 min later

      @zachleat I dunno you shouldn't have to build a new rendering engine to explore new ways of thinking about the UX of browsing the web. I want more folks trying to innovate exactly in the space that Arc was playing in, between the rendering engine and the user.

      (but also yes when your ideas about browsing the web are bad and harmful we could, we should, we're gonna, get yer ass)

      1. Zach Leatherman 25 min later

         @eeeps yeah, totally—I agree. Twas nothing more than a gripe about the hubris behind the name.

   5. Random Geek 1 hr later

      @zachleat Steve Jobs making fun of Dropbox for being a feature not a product and now folks getting VC money for data-hoovering browser skins.

   6. Jason Garber 1 hr later

      @zachleat Arc is three Chrome tabs in a trench coat.

   7. Bryan Schuetz 2 hr later

      @zachleat Counterpoint: It's not called The Rendering Engine Company
