I think @eleventy is going to have to return to at least broadcast content to Twitter, unfortunately. Given that a large portion of JavaScript folks have really dug in over there—it is doing harm to the project to not exist in those spaces.
Having some real feelings about it—mostly disappointment that folks didn’t make a bigger push to get off of the site.

@DavidDarnes Yeah. I don’t feel good about it.
@zachleat Twitter replaced RSS for many. If one simply broadcasts RSS style content then that reduces Twitter to a feed reader, which is a bit fun actually 😅
@eleventy Don’t get me wrong, I’m all in on Mastodon and this is my home base moving forward—but I really pushed hard to set an example and cut-off Twitter 100% across-the-board.
I’m learning that this was not entirely tenable for a Brand Account—especially when folks with large follower counts weren’t willing to do the same.
@zachleat @eleventy Yeah this is something I've been thinking about a lot and is really frustrating. The fomo is real, especially for tech twitter, because they're still thriving over there... Occasionally they'll complain about the deterioration of the platform but are still clinging to the audiences and klout they've built. I don't blame them If my engagement on the platform was better I might not of switched...
@zachleat We remove our social selves and reduce Twitter to a brand speaks to brand platform 😜
Speaking of, experimented with another “businessy” platform like LinkedIn?
@zachleat Rome wasn't burnt down in a day, I think is the saying right? :thinkerguns:
You do what you can. It's great that you've gotten on board with Mastodon and as birdturd continues to shoot holes in his boat (and lose a lot of money, daily), this place will become the new norm.
@tripleman I appreciate the support! I will sleep better when it fails 😅
@zachleat @eleventy It's tough for brand accounts to make the move and I think it's a sound strategy to have a presence on both sites for now. There's a very real possibility that Twitter won't exist in a few years, either die to technical or regulatory woes. Creating a mastodon presence steadily now in conjunction with a Twitter one is going to go a long way if/when they finally shut down for good
@zachleat @eleventy I think it's fine to make compromised.
I try to not engage in hyper-consumerism but I still have an Apple laptop and a smartphone, but they're both over 6 years old.
It could be a good strategy to actually have a brand on Twitter for generic comms and then, through convos redirecting more developed content, tips, recipes, etc... on Mastodon.
Can be disappointed that the flood did not happen, but you can still push the waves :)
@zachleat I think it's certainly more complex than first expected for a few reasons: the bird site's size, limitations of federation and the need to maintain contributor relations where the contributors are.
The Fediverse is at about 2010 Twitter at the moment but Space Karen is doing great things to move it forward. Don't be disheartened by the need for a transition period.
@zachleat Also, I'm terrible at social media so what do I know?!
@zachleat you can't spread the word if you're not being heard. We can't fret over the inactions of an entire megacorp's worth of users.
@zachleat @eleventy It really is disappointing. Much to think about. Like what it tells us, if anything, about the ethics, morals, and priorities of individuals and groups in our industry. And the difficulty/confusion/hassle of Mastodon/Fediverse. And the dopamine addiction to existing platforms that make alternatives seem unsatisfactory. And probably other stuff.
@charlesroper @eleventy yeah! I understood what you meant 👍🏻
@charlesroper @eleventy Absolutely. So much to unpack here. It really just seems as though many folks didn’t even try to move.
As someone that deleted their Facebook account whole-sale in 2016 and never went back, I’m feeling a little bit defeated by a career entanglement here.

@jimray ahaha good idea
🔥 Spicy counterpoint hot take…
😎 Maybe it's okay if the JavaScript Bro Dude™ crowd — who talk a good game about meritocracy and the marketplace of ideas, but are actually implicitly low-key okay with fascism — don't hear about Eleventy via social media channels?
🤔 Worst-case scenario, maybe they use a React based SSR. Which they were probably gonna do anyway.
@nathansmith Whew. I want to agree 100%. Unfortunately it’s a bit more complicated than that, especially as Eleventy overlaps with the JavaScript community just enough that the narrative about Eleventy on Twitter right now is either a ghost ship or worse: driven and controlled by Bro Dudes™ with less-than-friendly agendas.
So, if I understand correctly…
1. Lack of Eleventy updates via Twitter are leading some folks to the conclusion that it's a "dead" project?
2. While others are spinning a story about Eleventy being stewarded by… What, a bunch of nefarious villains?
I think that says more about the toxicity of the JS community who remained on Twitter, than you or Eleventy as a whole.
I personally wouldn't expend the energy. Still, I can understand the desire to set the record straight.
From what I see on the eleven_ty Twitter account, it's not like people can't find out where to get info if they need it.
I guess I view putting effort into trying to "control the narrative" on Twitter as just throwing good money after bad, so to speak.
Winning an argument on Twitter, or engaging at all… Just pulls one back down into the muck.
Yay, victory! But then I would look around and wonder: "Why did I even want to be here in the first place?"
Anywho, that's just my 2 cents.
@jbwharris @eleventy YES—exactly. Between the lines is pretty prominent right now
@slab_bulkhead @eleventy there is a perception on twitter that Eleventy development has slowed or stopped

@zachleat @eleventy I wonder if you could post a weekly digest of what has been happening in 11ty world on mastodon. Then link to the elk.zone version of the post on Twitter. As someone who really enjoyed the UI of Twitter, elk has made the transition way easier. Not saying all the folks still on twitter need a better UI to make the switch, but maybe some do...
Regardless, thanks for all you do.
@JackHPeterson @eleventy oh, I really like the idea of using this to push Mastodon. I do wonder if there is a lower-effort method! Some folks have suggested to cross post to Twitter with a link to the canonical mastodon post on each, which I like too!
@zachleat Yeah, I get this — it sucks, but for whatever reason there's a real contingent over there that just laughs at Mastodon (without really giving it a try, it seems).
It feels like the webdev community has split in two, possibly along political lines. Those that stayed seem a more pro-capitalism and less bothered by the ramifications of a few billionaires having massive control
@zachleat ah dangit, you made me blog again

@keithjgrant everything according to plan, except the bad parts (just fyi that toot was about two months old) 😅
