Thinking today about what harmful defaults our industry encourages, too.

@zachleat We should always keep in mind that 90% of users won't change the default in just about any capacity. We have a responsibility to pick the best defaults we can and think critically about them.
@develwithoutacause @zachleat A couple of years ago, the default on installing software was to have no authentication & to listen for network connections to make it easy for someone to try it. Turns out they didn’t change the defaults when going into a production environment & then they complained about getting hacked. Media firms would write in headlines, “Software X was hacked,” as though trying to say burglars hacked a door when instead the door was wide open.
@zachleat : That's definitely a can of worms! I'm thinking about all the prompts where we're asked to opt one way or another:
1. User agreements for software installation.
2. Permission prompts, largely for mobile apps.
3. GDPR privacy prompts for EU sites.
4. Login to unsubscribe. 🤦♂️@ericcarlisle oof yeah, framework telemetry opt-out is another one that I thought of
@zachleat Yes!! I've been saying this FOR YEARS. If it takes effort to donate, most people just keep postponing it forever — or never think about it. And one day, it's too late. And relatives are usually too heartbroken to donate.
@zachleat haha this struck a nerve in me I haven't thought about in years.
When I was a teen and got my driver's license, my mom told me not to be an organ donor because she felt weird about it.
Then my mom renewed hers a few weeks later and became an organ donor when she realized you got a discount for it.
She laughed it off but I was so pissed that me wanting to do the right thing was worth less than her $10 discount.
Sorry, venting, tangent, I agree with your point. 😄
