"Sort tabs by oldest, unload them, find duplicates, and consolidate tabs to a single window — buncha useful stuff in there!"

Where can I file the feature request for "close 299+ of them"?

why would you close so many beautiful websites
  1. Barry Pollard Bluesky 31 min later

My limited tabs feel more loved cause they know they're special! You need to learn to let go my friend...
    1. Zach Leatherman Bluesky 32 min later

why would I let go when I can hold on
      1. Barry Pollard Bluesky 1 hr later

        I know this pain
Why do you lock yourself up in these chains?
No one can change your tabs except for you
Don't ever let anyone step all over you
Just open your heart and your mind, mm
Is it really fair to feel this way inside?

Or are you comfortable with the pain?

    Yes, that’s tab-oo

@zachleat anybody else here in the replies wanna help me with an intervention?
1. Andrew Douglass Mastodon 29 min later

@jimniels @zachleat I think we need the browser tab equivalent of a Pythagorean cup. If you open too many tabs it’ll close them all and delete them from your history so you can’t reopen them. Maybe also if you open a duplicate tab.
  1. Zach Leatherman Mastodon 33 min later

@ardouglass @jimniels cruel!! I can stop opening tabs any time I want
    1. Jim Nielsen Mastodon 3 hr later

@zachleat @ardouglass the first step is acceptance. C’mon Zach, say it with us, “I have a problem and my (digital) life has become unmanageable.”
      1. Zach Leatherman Mastodon 3 hr later

@jimniels @ardouglass 300 tabs is a perfectly normal amount of tabs

Andrew Douglass Mastodon 22 hr later

@zachleat @Richr @jimniels more like 11 month tabs, am I right? (but it is a vvv good custom element, I've used it on a site).

@zachleat @jimniels am I reading it right that some of the ones in the screenshot have been open for nearly a year?

@ardouglass @jimniels don’t you dare scrutinize my screenshot

@zachleat I have to use cunning sometimes to get another instance of a page to open if my browser wants to switch to open tab

Zach, this is beautiful! 😍 I have HTHD (habitual tab hoarding disorder), too – can’t wait to give this a try!

If God didn’t want us to open 300 tabs, he wouldn’t have given us laptops with 16GB of RAM.

640k (640000 tabs) in a web browser ought to be enough for anybody
    1. Evil Jim O’Donnell Bluesky 6 hr later

Enough for a single small React app.

  16GB?! Fancy folk!

  8GB now for us peasants

If we're not meant to open 300 tabs, why do browsers support 300+ tabs?
  1. Mary Branscombe Bluesky 6 hr later

and let us craft nice named homes for them, 50 at a time (um, 300 is conservative)

I wrote snss-rs to read my chrome state last year. Funny timing, I just started foxread last night to do similar in Firefox. So I can version over time, which makes me feel much better about deleting tabs.

I should add a tabs web component to this

I’m sorry the tabs component is limited to 7 or fewer tabs for performance reasons

Adopted !! Nice tool for zen browser ;-) it could be cool to have the same with all workspaces, but it's not possible i think ...
1. mistergraphx Bluesky 1 day later

in fact it's already included in the last ZenBrowser update in the library feature ;-)

v1.5 of this extension is out now (adds Undo/Redo, a new purgatory Saved section, shows any tabs actively playing audio with Mute controls)

@zachleat Genuinely thank you for this 🙏 On more than one occasion I've found myself pushing 1000+ tabs, I think with this I might be able to _finally_ wrangle it all a bit better!
I love that it can group stuff up by host, that makes it really easy to clean up some of the tabs in a few clicks, The duplicate finder is nice too 👌

@hejchristian this would make a lovely review on the mozilla site 🥺

@zachleat Great idea! I've made an account to do just that 🙏
Thanks again, even my partner was amazed when she looked over to my screen! so we've gone and installed it on her browser too :)

I'll give it a try. I have been using addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefo... for a little while now just to keep an eye on the number and push me to clean-up every so often.

@zachleat I think your RAM looks 90 years old now ... :)
Jonas Bluesky 2 days later

about:blank deserves better
1. Zach Leatherman Bluesky 2 days later

(the real reason for that is that about:blank is used as a workaround for being unable to sleep visible tabs)

  otherwise I agree!
SEO Expert Bluesky 3 days later

Since you support Firefox containers and now Undo/Redo, does restoring a saved tab preserve its container and unloaded state across browser restarts? That feels like a surprisingly easy edge case to miss.
