I am a habitual tab hoarder (I have 321 tabs open right now) so I created a Firefox addon to help me manage every one of my very special tabs:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/list-all-tabs-updated/
You can sort your tabs by oldest, unload them, duplicate hosts, consolidate tabs to a single window — buncha useful stuff in there

Forked from this https://davidlazar.co/ extension: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/list-all-tabs/
@zachleat my wife suffers from the same condition (I get anxiety every time I see her screen!) - but I thought a really useful extension would be one that could tell you *how long* the tab has been open.
I did dabble to see if I could make it, but didn't get far. Surely if the tab's been open for 12 months+ it's time to kill it, right? RIGHT?!?!?
@zachleat oh this is very cool. I wonder how well it works with Zen, since the tabs work slightly differently when using tab organizers, in my past experience.
@furioursus seems to install and operate okay on my local Zen!
@zachleat oh that’s wonderful news. I’m gonna install it when I get home. I’d love for Zen (or Mozilla browsers in general) to have some sort of first party sorting but this will easily fill that need.
@zachleat Yoooooo this is dope! I love it already! I don't even keep *that* many tabs but this makes it feel way more manageable, even then!
@zachleat One thing I’m wondering: what does "Consolidate All" do? In Zen at least, it just opens a new window but doesn’t seem to change anything?
@furioursus Consolidate moves things to one window. If you only have one window, it will do nothing, I suppose!
@zachleat Gotcha. That seems to often be a caveat of using Zen. The one window syncing everything to itself makes for an odd moment where they just sort of sit there with a blank tab after the process. I’ll keep that in mind.
@furioursus awesome! even adding that feedback as a review would be helpful to others!
@zachleat Can I make a feature request? I would love to be able to consolidate tabs into a new tab group
@ysbreker https://github.com/zachleat/list-all-tabs is the home base! (though that one might be a tough sell since I don’t personally use tab groups 😬)
@zachleat Fellow tab hoarder and extension developer here — I went a different direction and built Tab Manager & Session Saver focused on *saving named sessions* so I can close tabs without anxiety. Different from your approach (yours is organization of existing tabs, mine is persistence/restore). Interesting to see how others tackle the same problem space.
@zachleat
Thanks, it seems very interesting. I am currently fond of #alltabhelper https://addons.mozilla.org/fr/firefox/addon/all-tabs-helper/I will try yours to compare!
I tried, it's nice. You're proposing “Important”, “All Tabs” and “Top Hosts” categories, why not All Windows? (close to what is done by #alltabshelper)
Another interesting category (but would cost CPU) is like about:performance having the tabs sorted by CPU/RAM consumption…
@bmarne I would love to have an option for CPU/Memory directly but I didn’t see any addon-accessible option for those! Thanks for trying it!
I filed your other idea here: https://github.com/zachleat/list-all-tabs/issues/1
All of my 300+ browser tabs are beautiful
@zachleat anybody else here in the replies wanna help me with an intervention?
@ardouglass @jimniels cruel!! I can stop opening tabs any time I want
@zachleat @ardouglass the first step is acceptance. C’mon Zach, say it with us, “I have a problem and my (digital) life has become unmanageable.”
@jimniels @ardouglass 300 tabs is a perfectly normal amount of tabs
@jimniels @zachleat @ardouglass 'tabs' not abs!
@Richr @jimniels @ardouglass I’ve been doing this too long https://github.com/zachleat/seven-minute-tabs
@ardouglass @Richr @jimniels *runs away screaming*
@ardouglass @jimniels don’t you dare scrutinize my screenshot
@zachleat I have to use cunning sometimes to get another instance of a page to open if my browser wants to switch to open tab
@zachleat Zach, this is beautiful! 😍 I have HTHD (habitual tab hoarding disorder), too – can’t wait to give this a try!
v1.5 of this extension is out now (adds Undo/Redo, a new purgatory Saved section, shows any tabs actively playing audio with Mute controls)
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/list-all-tabs-updated/
@zachleat You've done a lot better than my version in a short time https://addons.mozilla.org/en-GB/firefox/addon/tab-kraken/
@JessFairbairn all extensions are beautiful
@zachleat Genuinely thank you for this 🙏 On more than one occasion I've found myself pushing 1000+ tabs, I think with this I might be able to _finally_ wrangle it all a bit better!
I love that it can group stuff up by host, that makes it really easy to clean up some of the tabs in a few clicks, The duplicate finder is nice too 👌
@hejchristian this would make a lovely review on the mozilla site 🥺
(and you’re very welcome!)
@zachleat Great idea! I've made an account to do just that 🙏
Thanks again, even my partner was amazed when she looked over to my screen! so we've gone and installed it on her browser too :)
@zachleat I recently read something about “open loops” (=unfinished tasks) being a cognitive burden and am wondering:
What if it were easy to add older open tabs to an archive of links (and close them)? Data per link:
• URL
• Title
• Topic (crucial for retrieval—think one or more short tags such as “JS”, “politics”, “cooking”, etc.)
• If available: date of the tab being opened
• Maybe: Date of last update of web pageUsers would have to be prompted for a tag—unless a tab is in a tab group.
@rauschma yes! there is definitely something productive there. syncing to a bookmarking service would be lovely too.
@rauschma @zachleat I do this with the “Save Tabs URLs” add-on that exports tabs to a scratchpad. There are similar ones for better formatting .. but all of them re-open pasted URLs, too.
You place them in your knowledgebase or just a mail draft and prepend the current date (though the draft would have that, too). With a searchable title, this is easy to get back to. Also: my mail drafts are synched, so I can open them on any machine.

@zachleat This is very good. Clean. Clever. But uh… is this the best thing for ~~your~~ our mental health?
@devolute maybe I should add a Bankruptcy button
@zachleat This is a great extension!
@rodneylives thanks John! (This would make a great review on the addons site 🫣)
@zachleat I wasn’t expecting 72 of my 509 current tabs to be duplicates 😅
@robinwhittleton we have the same problems
