wow the thing that defaults to additive behavior makes bloat you don't say
at least we’re adding faster than ever
truly, number go up at historically unprecedented levels
"Claude, make number go up."
Including bugs and outages 😭
Lots of people “want to make software”, it’s almost not even a Venn Diagram when you also show the much smaller circle of people who “want to make good software”. 🫠
@zachleat A++++++++++++++ passive aggressive animations, would replay again
@pixelambacht *runs away screaming* 😅
@zachleat You're absolutely right, and I sincerely apologize for my earlier response. I was too eager with the plusses. I appreciate you calling me out on this and I running away screaming. I will remove one plus from my original message:

AI: *replaces four lines of semantic HTML with 80 megabytes of div soup, three hallucinated npm packages, and a loader that spins forever*
@zachleat Love the new compare feature. The filmstrip is very cool. It’s impressive to see new features added to what already began as a comprehensive resource. Any plans to add more sites to the comparison?
@damianwalsh I didn’t apply filmstrips and comparisons to the Built Awesome category for resource (file size) reasons on the site. I think it’s possible to readd it back in at some point but I just want to take care there as this site does pressure GitHub’s free tier 😅
@zachleat Ah-ha—yeah, wondered if something like that could be a thing. It’d be interesting even if it were just the top three in each category. Even at the top of the table, some of the comparisons across categories are pretty wild.
@damianwalsh yeah, the long tail of Eleventy/Build Awesome sites is pretty impressive, imo
@zachleat I'm not saying this to absolve any of these companies but do you know if there is an available comparison for these sites for when you start using the different services? Anecdotally it always seems like the homepages are the worst offenders because that's were all the tracking BS gets stuffed but its not people who use the sites go to everyday.
@McNeely ah, I don’t think I’m trying to make that point. The point I am trying to make here is that we aren’t at the level of automation that will craft good quality (and good quality is still important)
but to your point, I don’t know! It doesn’t seem like that could be measurable (if I understand you correctly)
@zachleat totally makes sense. One of my thoughts is that we will never see *any* meaningful movement here as long as the industry standard practice is to stuff homepages full of trackers. So in a sense I'm not even sure this is a "tools" problem.
@McNeely I’ve heard that question before and I’ve thought about it a lot. But this is the relationship that automation has with quality that I’m trying to get folks to look at more closely! My take is that some tools have a pit of success and some have a pit of failure and a good dev can make a bad tool fast but the real impact comes from defaults!
The tell that AI is ultimately another automation tool is that to the end user, nothing much has changed. The user experience of five years ago is similar than to today. We had online chat back then too. A regular person wouldn’t perceive any difference now that AI is doing whatever it’s doing
I think we should raise our standards
@zachleat I'm still believe that there are tasks for the AI and tasks for human that way. I'm still have projects with no AI entangled for the frontend design.

@zachleat sometimes it's hard convincing clients more data, more integrations, more AI is not better. But, measurable and tangible results like this are very useful for that. (And sometimes to a fault, but having tools to support your argument in front of a client is a must.)
@chris have you tried an “all websites are now 50% off” (not in price but in size) promotion
I checked with the AI and it said, “NO”
AI or Al?
(It doesn't matter, we both said "no")🤖Weird AI: bad
🪗Weird Al: goodIt’s a confusing system.
Imagine the typo
„AI, make the website god“
AI, go ahead and do the singularity!
I love the new filmstrips in Speedlify. And it's got comparison built-in!
🎶 ~hips~*filmstrips* don't lie

@krinkle I too love filmstrips!! I want to figure out a way to show resource congestion on them!
Curation and quality assurance are more crucial than ever.
Is it important?
Does it work?
Does it make sense?100%
I would also explicitly add: “Can we do without it?” 😅
The interspersed performance filmstrips in this post are savage.
we are making commentary! commentary is happening!
the awkward part of this post is that if these companies improve the performance of their websites it will change the meaning of the post (since those filmstrips update over time)
so far I’m about 5% worried about it

I was going to make the counter argument that throttled Lighthouse scores aren't at all representative of the users of these products but the X example is actually bonkers, even on CrUX. Perf has degraded almost every single week since May for real users (by up to 500ms per week).
CrUX shows you the users you have, Lighthouse shows you the users you want
The CrUX link on Speedlify showed the origin scores, which scored pretty well. Took me a minute to notice the missing /.
