The absolute UX *drama* of the new tinted (vs. clear) Liquid Glass preference in the macOS 26.1 System Settings. Why separate from the Reduce Transparency accessibility toggle? Why so prominent in the Appearance section? Why do users need to know about Liquid Glass at all? Mistakes were made here 😅

@zachleat Apple just won't admit that they fu*ked up.
@andycarolan @zachleat Apple never fails. Users constantly fail to appreciate their vision.
A thinner phone should solve that.
@tom_streeter ROFL, yup. 100% lol @zachleat
@andycarolan I think I see the system preference as an admission 😅
@zachleat ROFL! Yes!
This looks too pretty to pass up with my absolutely perfect eyeballs.
@zachleat Someone in Apple, probably: “We expect that the prefers-reduced-transparency media feature will lead to fingerprinting and identifying of people using macOS 26, so we have to make it a separate unexposed toggle”.
@kizu I use a 16.314159px user agent font size so everyone knows who I am
@pixelambacht @kizu if you have no fans, I am dead
@zachleat also it just doesn't do anything???
As far as I can tell all it does is change popup menus from "mostly opaque" to "almost entirely opaque" while leaving the quick settings chips and the dock as their old, hyper-saturated nonsense selves. They only fixed the bit that was fine
I mean Apple producing a hype video about Liquid Glass and how innovative it is really shows how little innovation is actually happening these days.
it was a needle to thread, they just missed the eye for a lot of folks (unfortunately)
It goes to show how much post-launch backlash Apple likely received from the Liquid Glass rollout.
I imagine it’s separate from the Reduce Transparency accessibility toggle because many users don’t know accessibility options exist, and the first place they might look is the Display settings.
Yeah, that’s my read too — it’s saying response-to-backlash

@zachleat seems mistakes weren’t made but instead were the norm here.
nothing about liquid glass has been handled in a way that’s simpler for the user, nor it has demonstrated to solve any real or existing problem.
@argonaut no arguments with that read from me 🎯
@zachleat I’m avoiding the Liquid Glass, and I’d love to fast-forward to the time when I can “turn off” Liquid Glass 🙈
