Huh, this piece of the WordPress drama was new to me: https://wordpressenginetracker.com/
How did WordPress get a list of all of the domains hosted with WPEngine? and is this count starting with a static list or is it populating with new WPEngine customers?

@zachleat Seems like that site will cost Matt Wordpress a bundle in damages in court.
@maxfenton I couldn’t speak to that but it certainly has me asking questions — seems pretty slimy — especially if it’s only measuring migrations from a fixed starting list
@jgarber Welp. Hope they realize Github commits are, like, public. https://github.com/codeyguydylan
@jgarber @zachleat I mean... this is not a personal home page I expected to read today nor really wanted to. Not digging further to see if this is really Automattic. https://web.archive.org/web/20220111062448/https://dymunson.com/file
@maxfenton @zachleat Wait, what is all of this?
@jgarber It seems to be the waybackmachine copy of the personal site of the person credited with the first commit and contributions to the site about who has left wpengine, which (since I don’t have linkedin) could support the idea that it is an automattic site by a guy who was in college a few years ago if they are at automattic now.
@maxfenton Oh, wild. Okay, I hadn’t paged back through all the commits and the contributors graph wasn’t loading for me on my phone. Thanks for clarifying and yeah, this is all super weird.
@zachleat Generously, they could be tracking requests to the wp/plugin updates servers and seeing who (over time) changes where those requests come from. But also, I've never thought about surveillance of my hosting when running updates.
@zachleat Besides the ?? about where it came from,I would want to know what that chart looked like for a year or two before the drama, too. Maybe that's natural attrition? It's not great "science".
@phae lies, damn lies, and WP Engine Tracker
@zachleat looks like it isn’t doing anything to track sites that have dropped WP completely, which would obviously require a new host. I find that the silliest because I’ve personally helped migrate a few sites off WPE because people replaced WP with a different CMS.
