my partner got me a 3D printer for christmas and it’s the first “magic technology feeling” I’ve had in a very long time—a glimpse at what a star trek replicator might feel like.
any good recommendations for useful or fun prints?

@zachleat Did you try the boat yet? https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:763622
@mattlehrer yeah! I think the boat is the hello world project the vendor recommended 🏆
@zachleat @mattlehrer Then you’re ready for its final form: https://youtu.be/ilIubT7ands?si=wlXB2v79Og0IHNto
@jabronus @mattlehrer HAHAHAHA what in the world

I did not know I needed this, but this was amazing. 10/10. Would watch again.
@konnorrogers @jabronus @mattlehrer watched it twice (again later with the kids)
@zachleat the thing that’s been tempting me is that there is a whole world of extensible/customizable storage stuff.
@luis_in_brief oh dang, yeah—I am now a container store
@zachleat yes, you are. This is @danilo ’s fave; I know there are at least two others: https://www.multiboard.io/
@luis_in_brief @zachleat this Gridfinity generator, for organizing drawers, is also excellent
Fully parametric, you can print whatever storage your drawer dimensions need
https://gridfinity.perplexinglabs.com/pr/gridfinity-rebuilt/0/0
@zachleat Everything cable management, cable storage and drawer organization. I also have a toothbrush travel case and a soap travel case.
@MoritzGlantz yes!! My second print was a charging stand for my phone/watch
@zachleat Surely a li'l possum for your desk is the first thing
@lewis now we’re talking
@zachleat I mostly see people using them for printing miniatures/scenery for ttrpg games!
@martycoote yeah! I love the idea of sprucing up some of my board games
@zachleat brings a whole new meaning to print and play!

@zachleat It’s so much fun. I’m doing a bit of Gridfinity and Multiboard and I printed some coasters for Christmas and snowflakes as reusable window decoration.
It is really magical how something that is only digital becomes a thing that you can touch in a matter of minutes or hours.
@yatil whoa multiboard looks very cool!
@zachleat It’s overengineered as hell and I love it for that. “Hands on Katie” on YouTube has good organizational videos (although the presentation is a matter of taste, I guess). And I like the “Functional Print Friday” for learning how to think about doing your own models.

https://www.youtube.com/@FunctionalPrintFriday@yatil thanks! 🙌 I’m trying to figure out what part of the rabbit hole to tackle first 😅
@zachleat Since you mentioned board games, I recommend printing custom inserts for games you like! Some of my favorite games have _terrible_ inserts, and replacing them makes set up, play, and breakdown so much easier!
@mengen yeah! Such a good way to upgrade existing games!
@zachleat A friend of mine has printed some cool stuff for me. Plant pots, for one.
You can find lots of great models here (plant pots were found here): https://www.printables.com
He also made a keychain of my freelance business logo, with an NFC chip in it, which I can easily reprogram using a free app on my phone. And a laptop-shaped business card holder lol
@josh oh nice! thanks!
@zachleat
Recommend you get yourself into 3D drawing apps. Can be super expensive but you don't need those - I'm using https://www.tinkercad.com - free. Basic shapes and you can join them together to make more sophisticated shapes.
here is a small locomotive i'm playing around with for my modelling. My printer is resin not filament though - different process.@simoncox this is probably phase 2 of the rabbit hole 😅
@zachleat if you do tabletop gaming that requires terrain, like D&D, I made tons of the Dragonlock stuff:
Plus dice towers for everyone I played with
@snugug my kids would love prints of this stuff too
@zachleat Barbie-scale furniture, DnD-scale gaming terrain and miniatures, cable organization, brio-compatible tracks - my most frequent types of prints. https://www.dmsguild.com/m/product/295239 shipworks is a cool project for the ttrpg realm. I have lofty visions of Halloween costume bits one year.
@zachleat Out of curiosity, what kind of printer did you get? My first foray (several years ago with a very cheap option) left me feeling more confused than empowered, but I’ve been wanting to try it again.
@stegrainer Bambu Lab A1 https://bambulab.com/
Works great so far!
@zachleat Nice! That’s the same one I’d heard about in a couple other places. Thank you for sharing!
@zachleat subscribed with interest - I've done a few prints at Do Space but struggled to find things that are useful, expensive/impractical to purchase, and don't immediately fall apart.
Probably the print that's used most is a magnetic key holder https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2567267
I'd love to print more replacement parts, like this broken component on my Rock Band kit; but I'm not convinced that ABS is gonna hold up to an evening of drumming https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:5226080
@mattdsteele there are different kinds of filament with different strength properties! Maybe you’ve already seen this guide https://bambulab.com/en/filament/collections
I regret to inform you all that 3d printing has become my entire personality (temporarily)
@zachleat please keep me posted! Maybe want to get into this someday, curious on what you print and why! So don’t hold back on my account :)
@potloodgum yeah! I’ll share some of the things I’ve printed so far soon!

@zachleat So what… no more shit posting?
@andydavies *existential crisis*
@zachleat I expect you'll be getting into openscad, my friend has done some nice mathematical forms which he's making in ceramic now https://www.kitwallace.co.uk/#top
@adamarmfield oh wow, scriptable cad!
