For the record, Bluesky can be “worse” than Mastodon (in important ways that we care about) and still be a temporarily valuable place to get folks off of Twitter/X.

@zachleat wait what? two things can be true at the same time on the internet? I thought the rules of physics did not allow this…
@jimniels the miami heat death of the universe
@zachleat And if anyone gets too worked up over either, it’s a good time to back away slowly and not make any sudden moves.
@zachleat i'm curious in what "important ways that we care about" you find bluesky worse than mastodon?
@uncenter very much more vulnerable to billionaire buyouts
@zachleat I'll be watching to see if @mmasnick can get @pluralistic onto Bluesky to know if/when it's less vulnerable to VC rampage or billionaire takeover issues. Tthe first biggest signal would be to see more visible fediverse integration or decentralization.
@asuh @zachleat @mmasnick @pluralistic it already is decentralized. You can host your own data. A billionaire can't take it from you.
@matthewp @asuh @mmasnick @pluralistic Hosting the data is just one small piece of the story. A billionaire can absolutely destroy Bluesky in a buyout scenario.
@zachleat @asuh @mmasnick @pluralistic how? Can you explain what they could do wrong that I can't simply choose not to implement in my host/app?
@zachleat this somehow gets lost in the discourse but you’re on point here. even if bluesky were a straight up clone of twitter with no grander aspirations it would *still* be a big win (for now at least) just getting people out of a fash-owned space
@jakelazaroff absolutely
@zachleat I've seen a lot of people realizing the benefits of open web principles in a very direct way on Bluesky ("you can share links here!") who otherwise wouldn't even think about using Mastodon.
That's a win in my book.
@aaadaaam hell yeah
