The table shows how much of the web is being broken with the release of iOS 17.4.

- this is the most compelling iphone advertisement I've ever seen
- Most of these features are aimed at driving 'engagement' or exfiltrating data off the user's device and into the vendor's analytics suite. Getting rid of them is the first thing I've seen from Apple in approximately thirty years which I would consider a pro-user change.
Incidentally, the chart itself is kind of a gross psychological game, since "Windows" in fact means "Edge" which is of course just a badge-engineered Chrome rebrand. So it's really comparing Google's platform, Google's other platform, and Apple, but it's calling one "Windows" to make it seem like there's some kind of majority opinion from which Apple is deviating, when in fact it's only Google software that supports all these dark patterns.
I'm not going to run out and buy a smartphone, or any other Apple hardware for that matter, but it's nice to know they're not entirely complicit in the ongoing personal-data gold-rush.

@jerryD maybe! I think there are plenty of levers that can be pulled, if folks are interested in taking steps.
Firstly, this survey https://open-web-advocacy.org/blog/its-official-apple-kills-web-apps-in-the-eu/
@zachleat in the “EU only” and “adhering to EU regulations”.
“It’s only in the EU” 😬 from folks that don’t live in the EU 😬😬😬
@zachleat This is wild.
@zachleat soooo...all of it. Got it.

@zachleat They are bringing about radical change again so that the world can be a better place. Time to put on our turtlenecks and pay some iRansom for mostly useless technology again.
@zachleat this might actually mean more native apps. less chromium in the background.
or more electron
So... Not much of the web at all then.
Don't get me wrong: Apple are assholes.
I find it sad that the whole issue revolves around one of the absolute worst things imaginable: web apps. I keep asking lamenting this one simple question and never get the answer:

@christianschwaegerl @zachleat @Lambo
EU is forcing Apple to allow alternative browser engines and app stores on iOS, so Apple is retaliating by removing deeper OS integration of web apps with a lame excuse.
