As my online friends are now scattered across 4 or 5 social networks now, I’m wishing there were a better way to like/share/boost cross-posted content across a bunch of networks (from the original source).
Some kind of superboost feature?
How are y’all handling this?

@zachleat by not having friends
@zachleat Given the numerous posts that I've recently seen about #OwnYourWeb, #RSS, and discussions on how to reach people beyond social media, you're not alone in this debacle.
@mahryekuh @zachleat Indeed – your friends could follow the RSS feed of your Fediverse account, if they wanted to.
@zachleat i guess urls still work
@exchgr I’ve heard of these, interesting
@jgarber I like the idea but really I think I’m looking for a way to see a post on a social network and then semi-automatically boost from the other networks that the author has posted it to (that I also have an account on)
I don’t necessarily want the noise of another independent post on my site
@zachleat Ah! I get you. Okay, yeah, that’s different.
Things you’d probably need at a minimum:
• something linking the “same” post from Networks A…n, and/or
• something linking the same user’s profiles from Networks A…n, and
• associations between your profiles on all those networks, and
• the means to boost those posts across all those networks by any number of means.🤔
Maybe doable? Seems fraught, though.
@jgarber has me wondering if I actually want a search engine that works with social networks https://fediverse.zachleat.com/@zachleat/111840445908110197
why didn’t google ever build this
@zachleat I can feel my hair turning grayer and my bones crumbling, but the first thing that came to mind was “Technorati.” 😂
I don’t think that’s quite right, but I swear there were efforts underway to map out just this kind of thing during the heady Web 2.0 days. I’m struggling to remember what it may have been, though.
@jgarber now that is a name I haven’t heard in a *long* time. Looks like someone snapped it up and made it some generic news portal
@zachleat eww gross 😭
@zachleat I haven’t read this yet, but found it linked from the IndieWeb wiki: https://tedium.co/2022/11/04/technorati-blog-search-engine-history/
@jgarber @zachleat And from that neck of the woods, Brid.gy is definitely looking into (might already have?) some of that functionality. I know BlueSky bridges are being worked on their.
Twitter is a bigger issue because they killed the APIs those services used. Maybe some kind of Zapier or Buffer integration?
@theadhocracy @jgarber For the record, I’m fine leaving Twitter behind. Not limited to the reason that it was hostile to indiedevs long before Musk came along—definitely not worth building an integration on now.
@zachleat mostly by not posting on Threads/BlueSky/Twitter. 😂
@peruvianidol my current reality is closest to this 😅
@zachleat Email is the superboost.
@knowler this post could have been an email!!
@zachleat Ehh I've conceded to just doing it all manually and choosing which platform to boost what. The discrepancies between them all is just enough that I don't think an all-in-one is going to be enough. It's why I fell out with those all-in-one messenger apps, you kinda miss out on the native quirks of each platform
@DavidDarnes Yeah, it makes me want a cross social network search engine that allowed me to find where an author has shared a particular URL on a bunch of networks
@zachleat I was about to suggest making a shortcut to search for URLs but both LinkedIn and Threads make it difficult to get any results at all. LinkedIn can be searched but only using Google, and Threads is too JS to even be indexed 😭
@DavidDarnes LinkedIn search doesn’t appear to be useful (JS or not). Like it or not, Twitter search was incredible and it looks like none of the other competitors come close
@zachleat @DavidDarnes I miss Twitter search 😞
@bglw @DavidDarnes same, it was so useful
@zachleat @DavidDarnes opt in syndication indicators on blogs that share links out? 😭
@cory @DavidDarnes this is a good short-term option imo!
@zachleat @DavidDarnes could be kinda cool — I’m abusing the cache file @nhoizey's GitHub action generates on https://coryd.dev/links/ to link to the Mastodon post when it's posted (since it uses the link as the key in the cache file), but seems doable for other cases as well.
@zachleat @DavidDarnes @nhoizey speaking of, just added the same to post detail pages
@zachleat You mean services like Buffer? (https://buffer.com/) Sadly there won't ever be free/open-source alternatives to it, because interfacing with the big social networks either costs a lot of money or needs backroom deals (I guess).
@tomwor Kind of! I think in retrospect, mostly I just want a way to organize canonical posts from the original author on different social networks
@zachleat Coincedentally this just came up in my feed: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/iconfactory/project-tapestry
I don't know if they'll include the boosting option, but weaving together different sources into one feed seems to be on a lot of peoples minds lately. They are also very clear about what works and what not.@tomwor yeah! I had my eye on that one too! I hope they pull it off (with a desktop app 😅)
@zachleat I'm manually copying from here to Blue sky when I can be bothered.
Not touching Threads with a 10ft barge pole though.@lachlan seems fair!
@zachleat That is a very interesting question! I usually do it…
mANUaLly 😭🫠
@matthiasott it works sometimes, every time!
