I felt silly for preemptively locking the @eleventy issue about switching to tabs and now I’m very glad that I did—the opinion-havers have arrived with opinions 🫠

@benschwarz @eleventy if only being reasonable and justified reduced the amount of opinions received 😅
@benschwarz @eleventy definitely not contributing, I suspect they likely aren’t even using the project 🫣
@benschwarz @zachleat @eleventy As someone that ran a JS "tabs over spaces" project (with a fated 4:1 ratio, don't at me) for most of a decade, allow me to celebrate your sparkling good taste and thoughtful "there is no way but the local standard" approach.
@slightlyoff @zachleat @eleventy imo every project should have defined editorconfig, code formatters, linting, etc etc, and PR checks to enforce it. No one should ever have to think about it beyond the initial setup
@benschwarz @zachleat @eleventy 💯
All preference should melt into code contribution intention. Anything in the way of that (modulo IP needs) is a bug.
@slightlyoff @benschwarz @eleventy 4:1 ratio, alex you can’t be out here admitting things like that
@zachleat @benschwarz @eleventy Did I mention that I once wrote a JS library that used inline XML (DocBook) and custom XSLT-FO templates to generate documentation?
Or that I once wrote custom OpenLDAP schemas to build a web Auth system?
Or that I once used XSLT in Oracle 8i Java Stored Proceedures to do templating?
If you don't have regrets, you aren't trying hard enough.
@slightlyoff @benschwarz @eleventy Don’t threaten me with a good time! I loved clientside XSLT in the IE heyday—it was so much speedier than DOM APIs.
@zachleat @slightlyoff @benschwarz @eleventy It's not often I get to admit in public my infatuation with XSLT.
@slightlyoff @zachleat @benschwarz @eleventy XSL-FO! Hashtag that's a name I've not heard in a long time dot gif!
I used Apache Cocoon to generate PDFs out of a database for publication back in the naughts.
And modxslt on top of an SVN repo for templating...
Ooh! I didn't know tabs were more accessible than spaces!
Furthermore, I realize I've been learning about website accessibility, but source code accessibility never even crossed my mind.. 😅
Could someone explain to me, or point me to a write-up about, why tabs are more accessible and about source code accessibility in general? ❤️
@wemic @zachleat the original issue had some more context! https://github.com/11ty/eleventy/issues/3098
