It’s been almost a year since I left Twitter, seems like it’s a good time to do an anonymous poll (if you have multiple accounts, scope your answer to your personal Twitter account only please):

@zachleat Some context: "I never left," BUT... I rarely check it. Basically just log on periodically to keep up with a few folks I know who are still there and nowhere else, or see time-sensitive news.
Mastodon still hasn't replaced real-time info for me. It's just not there yet as a decentralized platform.
@zachleat so I want to clarify. I never deleted my account. But I rarely use but do check in on some account still there. Mastodon is far and away my preference.
@zachleat I know you said "anonymous" but:
- Last tweet was 2022-12-31 at 11:59 local time (text in my next toot)
- Deleted my account(s) last month
- Deleted my 2FA recovery codes last week
...so I guess I'm really gone.
@pjohanneson no looking back!

@zachleat nuance to my answer is that i haven't deleted my account because of DMs but even that I almost never check anymore.
@zachleat I left and will probably never create content on X/Twitter again. But I do occasionally scan it for web dev information—which I sometimes post here.
One of the goals for this account, @ecmascript_news and @light_bulbs is to hopefully make Mastodon more interesting so that more people come and stay.
@zachleat deleted my main. Go back sometimes to watch the shit show, but usage is down 95%.
@zachleat im 99% only there to share blog posts - but if i see someone i know post something cool, will RT
@zachleat I left one year ago tomorrow, only go back if I click accidentally on a link. I occasionally search for old content of mine on my archive, build on your awesome tech! Thanks again!
https://jimken123.github.io/twitter/@zachleat Accounts’ still up, haven’t logged in or looked at Twitter in over 12 months. I don’t miss it, at all. Mastodon has not only been a complete replacement, it’s also been an expansion and improvement.
@zachleat I never left, but cross-post manually and check replies. I don’t even try to open the timeline, it’s just impossible to read after some time on Mastodon.
I left out of principle, but Twitter isn't the same as it was a year or so. There's nothing to go back to.
At any rate, I'm enjoying the 2008 Twitter vibe here on Mastodon much more than I was enjoying 2022 Twitter.

@ninabusch @zachleat How come what?

@zachleat After a few months here on Mastodon and barely logging in to check Twitter, I finally deleted my account there. I had had it for about 15 years, so it was a bit sad to let it go. I downloaded an archive of my tweets before I went though - may republish them on my own site someday.
@zachleat I picked the middle option because I totally posted about leaving and flounced off - but then posted again some months later being like "eh, I can do what I like, not going to guilt myself just for checking in" - and that's all I do, check in now and again.
I go periodically to like and reply to a few friends. Not out there linking to my blog posts or creating content for X, just keeping up with a few people I care about.
@zachleat I posted once for a good cause, but have not posted/liked/retweeted besides that since leaving. I do however crack it open to collect some memes for the group chat. Slightly sinful…
@zachleat Like others, I will clarify that I voted “I left, have not gone back” in the sense of have not gone back to post and interact. My account still exists, and I drop in every now and again to keep up site activity so the account doesn’t get deleted and troll-sniped. I absolutely do not post, scroll the timeline, or fave/RT. To me, that qualifies as “have not gone back”, but if you disagree then another poll may be warranted.
@Meyerweb fwiw, this matches how I’m gauging my interaction level too
@zachleat I think there will be a lot of confusion about the definition of “left.” I was a daily Twitter user, and now I visit less than once a month, but since I haven’t deleted my account, does that mean I haven’t left?
@dpom yeah, fair. My personal line is if an account is posting new public content.
@zachleat I "left" in the sense that I stopped posting, I don't retweet and I don't "like" anything. But I do use it in read-only mode to keep up with some topics that just don't have much coverage here yet (or I haven't found it). But even then that is changing.
@zachleat Deleted my account about 9 months ago. Stopped using it about a year ago. In my opinion, the handle on that platform isn’t worth anything. Feels the same as having one on Truth Social.
@zachleat I've severely attenuated my time on Twitter and I always feel like I need a shower afterward.
@zachleat I must be one of the few people who reads both their Twitter and Mastodon timelines every day. (I mute people on Twitter if I follow them on Mastodon, so that I don’t see the same posts twice.)
