minimum viable HTML for a modern web site:
<title>so modern</title>

@zachleat viable, but minimum? may i present…
<title>so modern
@jed so quirky!
Is a <title> even needed?
And I still type, with my little fingers:
<!DOCTYPE HTML>
Sheer force of (ancient) habit, I guess.
@iamdavidobrien https://mathiasbynens.be/notes/minimal-html has some info on that!
The DOCTYPE, <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">, is optional.
Jeez. I spent years typing that out (or more likely copy/pasting from some @w3c tutorial, who can remember all that?) in the 2000s.
Thank you for retrospectively cowronging me.
(Not a word, I know. Should be.)
@iamdavidobrien @w3c optional technically but important for strict mode, so I wouldn’t recommend leaving it out 😅
but title is required!
