I currently don’t understand the appeal of following a blog here—but maybe my RSS bias is showing? Is this primarily for brand accounts?

@zachleat same, but I think we underestimate the scale of “social feeds” in contrast to dorks like us who use RSS readers.
@zachleat The interesting bit for me is the reply functionality. For a while I used https://brid.gy as part of an IndieWeb-style commenting system, but stopped when I thought about the consent aspect. Folks assume a Fediverse context, not someone's blog.
How does WP handle that, I wonder without wondering enough to actually try it.
@randomgeek yes, that makes a lot of sense. But would it feel as if my blog is a separate identity from me when those conversations happen? Is it better to spread my identity across two accounts like that?
@zachleat Depends on how good you are at compartmentalization.
I'm terrible at it — I can't even manage an alt account — so it wouldn't work for my style.
@zachleat I wonder if more people use RSS readers or ActivityPub clients. But also, RSS is an inbox and following a blog here could be more casual and serendipitous and allow easy boosting.
@zachleat
I'll probably stick with RSS but for people who like to boost interesting posts, this makes it easier and the feature to display fedi replies as blog comments sounds appealing.@zachleat I think a Twitter-like delivery system for following independent content makes a lot more sense to a lot more people than RSS
(I love RSS as much as the next person, but/and I’ve tried and failed so many times to get non-nerds interested enough to pursue it even when they’re desperate to leave places like Twitter)
@ashur yeah! I think having replies as first-party content is useful too. I think the awkward part is spreading my identity between a personal account and a blog account. Can they be the same?
@zachleat most of mastodon is just an rss reader with a different form factor
@zachleat I guess it’s a build and they will come kinda thing. Nice to have the end point built in out of the box. I’ve enabled it on my blog to see what happens.
@dogwonder it’s good for the Fediverse, for sure! Do you have an example post?
@zachleat hah. So this is where I undermine myself as if I copy the link to the post it goes to my blog. Not the fediverse post. Um.
@dogwonder oh fascinating it redirects your original profile URL right to your blog—I like that
@dogwonder @zachleat it is a bit weird that there is not a profile page you can send someone to.
(also weird: you can’t edit or delete the posts it makes)
