The Reddit API pricing changes and subsequent tire-fire executive response is further evidence that we must take great care to look at how communities (and products!) are funded before we sink our time, hard work, and attention into them.

@zachleat very hard to maintain passion in open source and indie development when large platforms like this can destroy you in a single finger snap. Especially when we’re often having to ride on their coattails to gain any traction or interest
@DavidDarnes yeah…
yeah.

@DavidDarnes no apologies needed—just feeling this one!

@zachleat As is the Stack Overflow one
@voxpelli I somehow missed that SO sold
@zachleat Same here! Then I got pinged about https://meta.stackexchange.com/questions/389922/june-2023-data-dump-is-missing and then noticed this article in my feed here https://www.wired.com/story/stack-overflow-will-charge-ai-giants-for-training-data/
As I said elsewhere: We need more non-profit entities like https://commoncrawl.org/ rather than for-profit and often VC-infused entities
@zachleat (And side-note: We need all non-profit entities like that to be on the Fediverse, feels wrong to follow them on a platform that acts just like SO and Reddit 😝)

@litherum https://www.reddit.com/r/apolloapp/comments/144f6xm/apollo_will_close_down_on_june_30th_reddits/ is one spot, I believe there was an AMA with some reddit leadership earlier today too
@litherum some other coverage here: https://www.engadget.com/reddit-ceo-steve-huffman-defends-api-changes-in-ama-202924631.html

@litherum seems to be part of an IPO later this year https://www.cnbc.com/2023/06/01/reddit-eyeing-ipo-charge-millions-in-fees-for-third-party-api-access.html
@zachleat @litherum "We’ll continue to be profit-driven until profits arrive," sounds a whole lot like "The beatings will continue until morale improves."
At this point I'm probably going to be down to just Discord and the Fediverse when Reddit's API pricing goes into effect. Hopefully Discord makes enough from Nitro so they won't get greedy about their API like Reddit and Twitter. If they start charging bot devs, I'm gone. I make exactly zero dollars from my Discord bot but if I have to pay to keep it running I'm taking it down.
