Reading a new retrospective on Google’s AMP project from @davidpierce: https://www.theverge.com/23711172/google-amp-accelerated-mobile-pages-search-publishers-lawsuit
One small missing piece of history: the 700+ folks that signed http://ampletter.org/ starting back in 2017.

The raw unadulterated cringe of “Make the web great again” 🫠
@zachleat does it come with a fun red hat?
@konnorrogers hopefully more zissou
@zachleat I think they even had AMP GDEs for a while.
@deebloo certificates aren’t just for HTTPS
@zachleat any riff on the MAGA thing is cringe. All the conference talks with jokey titles, ugh
@Anneke yeah, 100%—folks are a little too eager to hitch their wagon to that reference
@zachleat @davidpierce …and most of them signed with links to their personal sites. ☺️
@matthiasott yes!! 🏆
@zachleat yeah. the google-v.-publishers framing makes a LOT of sense, but AMP was, at least in my mind, the single most devastating thing google did to whatever goodwill they’d built up with the broader tech community
@beep in tough competition with google reader! 😅
@scottjenson @zachleat I know a lot of you did, and I appreciate the hell out of all of you who tried 💜
@beep (same!) @scottjenson
I believe Google is the devil. But this is hilarious:
“You meet with a Facebook person and you see in their eyes they’re psychotic,” says one media executive who’s dealt with all the major platforms. “The Apple person kind of listens but then does what it wants to do. The Google person honestly thinks what they’re doing is the best thing.”
@zachleat @chpietsch @davidpierce “Sites were too slow, too hard to use, too filled with ads.” … - guess who was providing all these ads to the sites making them slow?!
@dans_root @chpietsch @davidpierce that’s the wildest part of the article (for me):
“My reaction was that the main problem is ads, so why don’t you fix the ads? They said they can’t fix the ads. It’s too hard.”
@zachleat @dans_root @davidpierce
Thou shall use only the one true ad network that is Google's.
Why do you think they acquired Doubleclick?
@zachleat @davidpierce this is just ad companies that cause problems for mobile user complaining they can't get away with jamming so video ads on every page. I have no sympathy for them
@zachleat @davidpierce This made me think, we jumped through the AMP hoop for traffic, least at CBSinteractive we did, but it hit me reading this, AI is going to kill a lot of sites. Why go to CNET to read a review when AI can summarize multiples. Also aicritic.com is available from godaddy, wink wink nudge nudge say no more!
@kduke @davidpierce this reply seems… computer generated
@zachleat @davidpierce A computer can be this silly? 😜 🎉
