The more time I spend in tech the more evidence mounts that misunderstanding consent is the root cause of so many issues.

this subtoot brought to you by the developer currently attempting to convince the world that a pre-selected “Yes” value in a command line prompt is not a default choice.
@zachleat deliberately and creatively “misunderstanding” consent, right?
@sil for my own sanity I must assume incompetence over malice
@zachleat I’d like to believe that. (This is why https://web.dev/learn/privacy/ bangs on repeatedly about being transparent, because it’s a competitive advantage which your dishonest competitors cannot match.) But an actual misunderstanding of consent (on tech issues, _not_ on personal ones) is relatively easily mended; the repeated failure to do this obvious mending even after being told does suggest that it was malicious from the outset in many cases.

@zachleat As much as i actually value your sanity, because you are a nice person, having worked for quite a few big companies before, i can tell you from experience that they HATE consent. To quote one of the heads of marketing: "This shouldn't even be their fucking choice to begin with."
Yes. He was angry that the european union made him reveal just how much he was spying on people. And then he asked me to do every trick in the book to get out of it. I quit.
@catraxx well, dang—sorry you had to go through that—what a terrible situation.
