@khalidabuhakmeh I think that’s fair!
@zachleat I've been biting my tongue on Gatsby, but it has personally been a bandit of joy when compared to the options out there.
It makes you feel crazy in a world of other sensible options. And this is coming from someone who uses it right now and wants out immediately.
@khalidabuhakmeh I can’t speak to that personally (nor would I discount your experience) but I do think there are a bunch of non-technical reasons that this does make sense for both Netlify and Gatsby!
@zachleat That's fair too. Some folks might like the Gatsby experience, and that's good on them.
I just found that going through GraphQL for almost every enhancement hurt the essential idea of experimenting and iterating on a website, which is the sweet spot for so many static site generators.
@zachleat Also, this isn't to put down the individuals that worked on Gatsby. I'm sure folks cared and worked hard on Gatsby, and probably learned a lot from the experience.
People > Frameworks 🤗
@khalidabuhakmeh well said—I do have a few friends that work on Gatsby!
@zachleat @khalidabuhakmeh I can second Khalid on this. We (JetBrains) have a big Gatsby site that I started Oct 2018.
He and I are busy on a rewrite using new 11ty 2.0 stuff, to make the port easier: Vite (to give TS), TSX, Vitest (to replace our Jest tests), and TypeBox (to kind of scratch some of the GraphQL itch.)
@pauleveritt @khalidabuhakmeh Just speaking for 11ty, nothing is changing in our space, though I’m assuming that the arrangement for Gatsby is likely different. Eleventy is an independent project that is full time sponsored by Netlify.
@zachleat @khalidabuhakmeh Yep, I had a company that went through VC rounds so I have a feeling about what's going on.
That said...Khalid and I *are* turning 11ty into the CMS we are using Gatsby for. 😇
Maybe we could get you on a JetBrains/WebStorm webinar and show you what we're doing, get your reaction?
@pauleveritt @khalidabuhakmeh yes! Sounds great!
@zachleat @pauleveritt it's been really fun, even when we bang our heads against the wall.
I'm mostly a #dotnet expert most days, but the JavaScript/Typescript thing is growing on me. So, thank you and the 11ty community for sparking joy in my cold enterprise heart.
@khalidabuhakmeh @pauleveritt if y’all want to put something on the schedule my email is zach@zachleat.com!
@zachleat @khalidabuhakmeh We'll get back to you when we have a migration ready for eval.
I'll say this...what we're doing, especially the test-first plus debugger, is really productive and fun.
@pauleveritt @khalidabuhakmeh awesome!

@andy I think that’s a fair reaction. Looking strictly from a non-technical perspective—it makes a fair bit of sense for both parties

@tarasis Great question—it does expand the Open Source team at Netlify to include the open source devs on Gatsby (joining 11ty and Solid).
Nothing changes for 11ty here, we’ll continue our independent ownership with full time sponsorship moving forward.
@zachleat interesting! I don't know much about Gatsby but didn't they have a good reputation for optimising images?
Would love to be able to use just the image stuff without having to use the whole framework...
@sarajw I think my current colleague Matt Kane worked on that!
@zachleat if this means that netlify will integrate gatsby cloud’s features into their platform — woohoo! my only gripe with gatsby is that it’s slow as balls, and gatsby cloud had a lot of features that fixed that. if netlify’s builder can utilize that, it’ll be a huge boon
@zachleat kind of feels like netlify trying to emulate vercel by acquiring a major react framework tbh
@selfagency hmm, I’m curious what you mean—I think you might be conflating the open source project with the Gatsby company? This might be helpful: https://indieweb.social/@philhawksworth/109794426691868874
@zachleat no that's pretty much what i meant, netlify has absorbed gatsby inc. so now netlify is to gatsby as vercel is to next.js.
