Getting comfortable with this new Windows laptop—navigated over to play some music on https://tidal.com/ in the Edge browser and it showed me what appears to be an OS-level advertisement (?) for Spotify.
Microsoft… I, uh… what are y’all doing?

@zachleat yeah every time someone tells me how good Edge is, I see something like this that tells me that MS is being a snoop.
@zachleat the app probably uses less resources

@jerryD I think you might have misunderstood. Tidal and Spotify are competitors—it seems like Microsoft is selling OS-level advertising space on Tidal’s web site (basically).
@zachleat oh no, I understood (I think?). Microsoft has bloated the Edge browser with unnecessary garbage like that Spotify/adWord-like dialogue. Using the Edge browser is like walking into Times Square these days. I was just suggesting using the native Tidal application for Windows instead of the website. Also, I recommend never using Edge.

@p1xelHer0 and that’s fine but this is quite an overstep
This is a *huge* violation of the core principles of the web.
@zachleat there are serious privacy issues with that browser: would you consider using something else?
@wtrmt it’s just a testing machine, I use Firefox as my daily driver
@zachleat never forget, M$ has no principles, except to make money. It's still a corporation; it's just a hungry one these days.
@zachleat The intrusion of ads into software required to use hardware one has paid for drives me bananas. This is the dark future of constant surveillance and user data harvesting that cheap TVs already portend. I don’t want to be the product.
@attaboy I think it’s more than that—if I run a web site, do I want a competitor’s advertising to show up when a visitor goes to my web site?
@zachleat Agreed, it’s an abomination. Much like search keyword ads from competitors, except even more of a hostage-taking situation.
@attaboy yeah! Definitely some overlap there—leads me to believe that Microsoft thinks of Windows in the same way that Google thinks of google.com, which is frankly a scary realization.
@zachleat this is such a shame! Edge is a great browser, but it is riddled with ads and other bloat from Microsoft. I don't understand why they do this — this only turns users away and sparkles controversy.
@zachleat yeahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh that’s legit
@zachleat Not to start too much of an OS war, but examples like this is why I can't get comfortable with Windows anymore. Linux isn't as neat out of the box, but at least I know what's going on most of the time, and with how software has evolved over the past years there's mostly no difference otherwise. (For me, of course. YMMV.)
@nullsprite This seems like a fair take to me
@zachleat The shopping stuff is likely paid for by advertisers. It’s not in the OS, but part of the Edge browser. You can turn it off. I get annoyed by them snooping at my content and then recommending stuff to buy.
@ozmox just looking at https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/rewards it doesn’t seem limited to Edge (even though this instance may be shown by Edge)
@zachleat This is why I'd like to move away from Microsoft's products; because their "ecosystem" is so intrusive. But switching to Linux seems to require a lot of work to get it running and keep it running.
@zachleat Every time I need to use something other than Brave to browse the web (or am not behind a Pi-Hole) I’m just appaled. How do people accept this level of BS???
@dirkhh yeah, it’s not good.
@zachleat Damn. I’m even happier to have returned to Firefox now.
@zachleat This is my shocked face 😐 et cetera and so on…
@zachleat That's why I don't use Edge. Wait till you "update" your machine and get a full-blown OneDrive ad before login screen.
@naiyer I mean, even that seems less egregious!
Showing ads in an OS you control for other products you own: not great, but fine.
Showing ads on top of other businesses web sites for their competitors—WHAT
