Loving @elk so far! I am curious how it decides whether to show a large preview for an account that followed you versus a small thumbnail—is it based on that person’s follower count?

@zachleat @elk The current logic shows a large preview if the account has a header and the followers count is bigger than 250 or if it wasn't going to be grouped and it has more than 25 followers. I did a heuristic that looked ok but we haven't had time to think much about it. Maybe we should use a percentage of your own followers for example to show big cards to folks that are just starting using Mastodon. You can see the current condition here:

@zachleat @meduz @elk Good points. I think if we show the big card expansion for everyone with an avatar and a header it may break your notifications when you do a good post. But I also think it is better if we find an heuristic that doesn't depend on follower count. Maybe we could show it if on top of avatar and header, it has a proper description, and includes at least a profile meta link?
@patak @meduz @elk forgive my armchair design idea but I think it’s pretty close to great as-is. I’d just remove the follower count minimums.
Then for groups keep the only small avatars for everyone and sort the avatars in the group first by if they have avatar/cover image (and then maybe by follower count too?).
For singles/non-groups, only show large previews if a user has avatar/cover image.
(feel free to ignore me, too 😅—still loving it either way)
@zachleat @meduz @elk I think we should still show some big cards for grouped notifications. There are a lot of times when people follow you in groups because of a post was shared a lot. Let's try a new algorithm for grouping that stills uses the followers count but removes the minimum limit and see how it works.
Elk will now order each group according to who has a header first (giving priority to folks that did setup their account), and who has more followers second. Then it shows the first one of the group (if it has a header) as a big card, no matter how many followers it has. If only one remains and it has a header, it is also expanded as a big card. If not, the remaining are shown as a group of avatars in a single line.

You can switch to Elks' canary release and see how it works for you before it hits the alpha channel at https://main.elk.zone
@zachleat @patak @elk Posted a new issue (not for the grouping, but for the notification design in itself): https://github.com/elk-zone/elk/issues/1409
Made some proposals, my favorite being this one by only changing the `<div>` wrapping the image:

@zachleat @elk My account is set so that followers must be approved, and I get the small previews for follower requests in notifications. Once I approve a follower, I get the large preview in notifications. (I have to use tusky to approve followers for now, I don't see that feature on elk, yet.)
There has been no correlation to follower count in my case.@jenned @elk this reply has the full details: https://fediverse.zachleat.com/@patak@webtoo.ls/109739576115025739
