this very aptly applies to developer tools as well
Technology should serve you, not trap or burden you.

Why are you grimacing? 🤔
I make one of those boxes
When I think of developer tools, I think of things that attempt to eat the world via abstraction: Tailwind was one of those vs CSS. JSX was another vs JS. Not a complementary tool to existing workflows, you have to buy-in wholesale. I wouldn’t judge Polypane in the same light, fwiw!
Right! I usually think of developer tools as anything external that you use to develop: the hammer rather than the nails and timber.
Ah, I see. I think you’re probably right that most folks categorize them similarly. Maybe I should have said frameworks and libraries 🤔
@kilianvalkhof.com makes not a hammer but a whole workshop and lab that helps us make and test the best things we can with our own hands.
Frameworks tell us we don't need the workshop and lab, just use their building blocks. Just a shame the blocks never *quite* fit together like we want them to...
Or the bricks totally go together but they're so bloody HEAVY and why are they all bejazzled?
Imma start a new swear, something too heavy on the JS ist beJSen, pronounced like beschissen, German for shitty
It’s a bit sad that framework has become such a dirty word. Every static site generator (or even every router) is a framework, right? Or you wouldn’t call them that?
Comes with a specialty wood shaver that can only shave with the grain of the web.
Kilian, you make the box on the right. Your tool is a perfect "how it should be" 💜 I've never once felt trapped by it.
