@zachleat Wowza!
@bobmonsour look, the first step is admitting I have a problem
@zachleat @bobmonsour it’s not a problem, it’s a _collection_
Great post!
Gotta say, missed opportunity tho to title the post “ICANN stop buying domains…” lol
you’re the best in the business and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise
fix deploying now! (with attribution of course)
lol :chefskiss:
Buying domains:
ICANN
YOUCANN
WEALLCANN
I used to work with a guy from Philly who used to talk about “water ice” all the time and all of us Chicagoans were like, “do you mean Italian ice?” So I registered whatthefuckiswatericedoyoumeanitalianice.com and gave everyone emails there that were their full first, middle, and last names.
ha! Beautiful. I love super long domain names
the longest domain I own is also one of my favorites: americamyfaceissayingeverythingthatyouneedtoknow.com
😂
*incredible*
@zachleat Super cool! Was Time Machinery a movie blog about dissecting all cinematographic depictions of time travel? 👀
@chriskirknielsen yeah! I mostly just wanted to log movies with time travel mechanics but I didn’t get very far 😅
@zachleat Well this is proof that you have good ideas, even if the domain is abandoned! (This reminds me I still haven't seen Primer, and all I hear are good things…)
Would have been cool to have a random-ish form — you pick a type and get a suggestion: "I'm in the mood for a [TIME LOOP] movie" and blam, Groundhog Day!
@chriskirknielsen yeah! I think Letterboxd has replaced a lot of this for me, but you can see I went just about as far with my Letterboxd list as I did with that blog https://letterboxd.com/zachleat/list/time-machinery/ 😅
@zachleat Maybe past-Zach figured future-Zach would handle it. A time loop in itself, all very fitting!
I would do this, but then I'd be forced to confront it 🙈
it’s okay, Eric. we’re in this together
You could run a support group for the rest of us
should I buy a domain for it or
-
ooh, this is a very good domain
I think I still oen unbenannt.ai, which was the default German file name for adobe illustrator files
Oh man, this is brave... to put one's graveyard of domains out there like that 😁
I'm not sure I could be brave enough to put all the domains and failed ideas and projects that I've owned. 😬😂
how many are we talking? 😅
I’ve retired about 1 domain per career year, which seems like too many tbh
I had 80 names at one point, several years ago.
I too, have been letting them go as they expire. I’m currently down to about 20. 🥹😁
80 simultaneously active names, wow!
lol yeah it’s a sickness 🤣
@zachleat Who among us has not at one time bought a domain with the last vowel chopped off. competr.com is good, though :)
@ricmac hah, a blast from the past for sure 😅
With all that domain experience, do you have a favourite registrar?
I would’ve said google domains, now not really 😱
I do have the ones I’ve used on www.zachleat.com/uses/ though
one piece of advice that I would give is to separate your registrar from your hosting provider, if at all possible
That's some solid advice, thanks!
I'm currently with Porkbun and have used them for a few domains now - never really felt the need to shop around (yet), but it's cool to know what other folks like :)
I’ve used Hover since I separated registration from hosting. They won me over with their Buckaroo Banzai hold music.
would you mind buying some domains for me I’ll DM you a list thanks
cory you should talk to someone about this
this is me reaching out
I’ll try to find some therapists that specialize in domain names for you
Used to own sacrebl.eu, gave it to a UK comedy club.
I once registered englessspam.org/com just to have for every time I needed to register somewhere.
Alas, no mail sent to that domain ever made it there for some obscure reason.
Now how much does that cost per year, Zach
…oh no
well, wait it’s probably about ~$100 per year
@zachleat @AnthonyBaker This is an amazing idea. I plan to follow suit and blatantly steal this idea for my own domain name “backstory”.
@splorp @AnthonyBaker yeah! do it!
@zachleat @AnthonyBaker If nothing else, it’d be a wonderful brain stretch to see if I can recall all of the historical details.
