Found some unnecessary twitter metadata still sitting around on my web site and it’s always a good time to delete code (*especially* now).
Might be worth checking your web sites to see if you can delete it too?

X code
Oh. Wow. Great pint. Sort of forgot about that, was such a part of my default. And OG is Meta (the org) isn’t it, but guessing not proprietary
Thanks for the reminder 🧡
Doesn’t Bluesky also use those tags?
ogp.me Open Graph is the default most folks use nowadays
Can't you provide more info with the twitter tags though?
this is a question you’ll need to answer yourself but I personally am not wasting any more time on twitter or X
What's the point? The Twitter tags are rendered by Twitter solely. Do other platforms rely on the Twitter tags? As far as I'm aware, OpenGraph is the standard, not the Twitter tags.
Well that was my question, if Bluesky uses those tags to get extra context that the open graph ones don’t give
IMO OpenGraph is more information-rich than the Twitter tag.
I mean open graph has no counter parts for twitter:site or twitter:creator. But none of that matters if Bluesky doesn’t utilize them
yes!
@zachleat Good reminder! I also need to check whether Discord still relies on twitter:card to determine what size thumbnail to use for link previews. IIRC it'll take everything else from OpenGraph or plain HTML tags, but the last pass I made through my site I ended up putting that one back. For the time being.
TIL I needed to opt-in to an allow-list of domains for `fediverse:creator` on my profile (in addition to the `<meta>` tag on my web site)
Edit Profile -> Verification (tab) -> Author attribution (section) -> Websites allowed to credit you (textarea)
Read more about fediverse:creator here: https://blog.joinmastodon.org/2024/07/highlighting-journalism-on-mastodon/
@zachleat @matt Is there a way this might be integrated into Write Freely or Write.as? I tried adding it to my individual posts, but I think the Meta tag gets scrubbed from the editor in Write Freely.... Might be related to the markdown compiler dependency that you use?? FWIW, I don't care how it gets embedded into the content, I would just love if Write.as would allow me to set a meta tag with name and content attributes. What do you think?
what did you use to delete all your tweets?
I believe github.com/lucahammer/t... was the thing that worked best
thanks a lot!
Good idea. Doing this on hardcover.app too. 👍
great!
It's a >10M€ market cap company, so I expect things to go a bit slower, but sure, let's do this!
Whoopsies, correction: >10B€ :)
👏👏👏👏
Good point, just cleaned up mine too. Didn't like that musky smell.
✅ Did this for Calibre back in 23’
Huh, that's a great reminder! Thanks Zach 😊
@zachleat Oh, good call!
Thanks for the reminder
Good idea! I opened an issue in Next.js to have the option to remove these: github.com/vercel/next.....
Nice! Shame that it’s locked down in that way stock though
100% Agree! I think it would be less likely to get this prioritized if it means a change in the previous defaults.
Maybe @leerob.com can help with this?
Side note, but did you know the Twitter metadata spec is used by more sites than just X? 🫠
yep.
So painful.
I was also looking for a way in Next.js to decide which open graph metadata to generate... Using the `metadata.other` property worked as a workaround in all my projects 🙃.
