I’ll admit I haven’t kept up on the tiktok ban: what specifically about tiktok’s infrastructure is going to be affected? The app in the app store? The web site? Why not just move the TikTok servers overseas?

They are voluntarily taking it offline. The ban impacts Apple and Google listing TikTok in the App Store and Oracle hosting their data. At least that’s my understanding
Huh — weird. So it’s not a ban at all? 👀
As far as i can tell, the recent court ruling was about whether a law passed last year requiring ByteDance to divest TikTok within 12 months might violate users’ first amendment rights. The court ruled it wouldn’t violate those rights.
There are a lot of inflammatory headlines because clicks mean ad revenue
its a required divestiture within 270 days, or else companies that provide services to tiktok (app stores providing tiktok downloads for example) would be fined heavily if they continued to provide for tiktok
which is... a ban
(tiktok effectively can't be sold, as the proprietary algorithm tiktok uses under the hood is owned *by* bytedance, who refuses to sell it. if the app was sold without its algorithm it would be effectively worthless, so nobody wants to buy it either)
Well that’s ByteDance/ the Chinese government being stubborn
i mean its like saying someone has to go to jail unless they donate their heart. its not feasible for them to stay alive by giving up their most essential organ!
Would Oracle be on the list of folks who couldn't work with tiktok? Or is that considered tiktok itself?
I believe Oracle is included in that
Probably nothing. The whole ordeal is ridiculous. And dangerous.
