We need to be thinking ahead to when Musk or a Musk-type buys Bluesky.

I’d start a blog.
excuse me, you have a blog
And I am working through as I type how to parse my BS rss into notes on that there blog. Original idea was just parse at build, now leaning towards an action that checks for new posts and commits markdown files. Better archiving & a cheat for a gui posting interface.
If I was normal I’d just set up at micro.blog

Nice to see someone talking about it but *whew* that’s a lot of pieces someone will have to set up, develop, and maintain (for just the server piece)
For sure. Not trying to invalidate your concern, just seems this place could overall use hope where needed today.
Very fair
Trying to think what's the most vulnerable aspect of it. The protocol is open and technically anyone can fork the app and spin up their own version, right?
I guess loosing access to the Bluesky hosted Personal Data Server would be the main risk?
The connections are the value—it’s rarely the content. Where’s the escape hatch for the connections?
Webmentions
It's inevitable, despite what a lot of folks want to believe
100%—lucy is holding the football, let’s kick it
TBF, I think Mastodon has a similar danger profile, despite being disparate instances. It's still mostly controlled by one person who manages the largest and most popular instances on the platform.
Naw—I could block mastodon.social today and still get a ton of value out of Mastodon generally
There's always a critical mass in the "engagement economy" and that will always make it come crashing down :(
It's not valuable enough when it's small, but to get big enough to truly be valuable to us, takes it VERY close to that critical mass
I mean, that’s what we’re used to but it doesn’t have to be this way
Dismantling late-stage capitalism would work... though that might be extreme for keeping my social feed intact (though it has merits for other reasons, too)
some kind of federation perhaps
the perhapsiverse
I definitely don't see how the incentives create a different outcome
for Bluesky? yeah—absolutely. We’ll repeat the same Twitter song and dance (and that’s the best case scenario for this place)
by the time its obvious everyone will act like it was always obvious and the gas lighting open washers will have moved on and cashed out (but i'm not cynical ! love this place !!!1!)
💜 we’ve seen (and remember) too much 😅
there's gotta be a name for this phenomenon. it's like the Cassandra curse but not really a prediction so much as history annoyingly repeating itself in an industry which grows so fast it almost completely refreshes every 3 years.
Finally somebody said it
Well, we leave. Like when Musk or a Musk-type buys a country, everyone just gives up and leaves, right? Right?
If Bluesky will be truly decentralized by that moment, what will he actually buy?
